Symmetry and the Illusion of Control as Bases for Cooperative Behavior
The existence of cooperation in the face of temptation to free ride requires explanation. We discuss two psychological phenomena, 'symmetry' and 'the illusion of control,' which we believe underlie the 'what if everyone acted that way' type of reasoning used in some types of cooperation. There may be reasons to critique evolutionary psychology (EP) and particularly its application to the study of organizations. OBJECTIVES: This study developed a new acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) severity system by including diagnostic, physiological, functional, and sociodemographic factors predictive of survival. METHODS: Three-hundred five persons with AIDS in Boston were interviewed; their medical records were reviewed and vital status ascertained.
