The Use of Causal Language in Case Reports and Case Series Reporting Ischemic Stroke Following Cervical Manual Therapy
Objective This study aims to investigate how authors attribute causality in case reports and case series describing ischaemic stroke following cervical manual therapy. Methods This qualitative, document-based study is nested within a larger epidemiological investigation evaluating the association between cervical manual therapy and ischaemic stroke (PROSPERO ID: CRD42024602659). Eligible case reports and case series will be identified through a s…
Prevalence, incidence, and factors associated with pain-related disabilities, and experiences of limitations due to pain among First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada
OBJECTIVES: To describe the prevalence, incidence, factors associated with pain-related disabilities, and experiences of limitations due to pain among First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of the literature. The search strategy, developed with a health sciences librarian, included Indigenous-specific and health peer-reviewed databases, and grey literature for studies from inception to May 23, 20…
The association between chronic back problems and poor sleep quality among Ontarian adults aged 60 years and older
Increasing Trajectories of Multimorbidity Over Time
Our findings indicate that multimorbidity is not only becoming the norm, but is emerging earlier in the lifecourse and particularly for low income and obese individuals from more recent cohorts. The findings point to the importance of planning interventions and policies to deal with more recent birth cohorts entering into older age with worse health than their predecessors
Differences in perceived fairness and health outcomes in two injury compensation systems
The study shows large differences in perceived fairness between two different compensation systems and an association between fairness and health. These findings are politically important because compensation processes are designed to improve recovery. Lower perceived fairness in NSW may have been caused by potential adversarial aspects of the scheme, such as liability assessment, medical assessments, dealing with a third party for-profit insuran…
Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis of Mechanical Workplace Risk Factors and Low Back Pain
Objectives. We used individual participant data from multiple studies to conduct a comprehensive meta-analysis of mechanical exposures in the workplace and low back pain. Methods. We conducted a systematic literature search and contacted an author of each study to request their individual participant data. Because outcome definitions and exposure measures were not uniform across studies, we conducted 2 substudies: (1) to identify sets of outcome …
Neck pain patients’ preference scores for their current health
Health-related quality-of-life is considerably diminished in NP patients. Depressive symptoms and preference-elicitation methods influence preference scores that NP patients assign to their health
Characterizing self-rated health during a period of changing health status
Responsiveness to change to change due to supportive-expressive group therapy, improvement in mood and disease progression in women with metastatic breast cancer
Responsiveness to change due to supportive-expressive group therapy, improvement in mood and disease progression in women with metastatic breast cancer
Health status, work limitations, and return-to-work trajectories in injured workers with musculoskeletal disorders
There are return-to-work status specific health outcomes in injured workers. A sustained first return to work is not equivalent to a complete recovery from musculoskeletal disorders
Association Between the Decline in Workers’ Compensation Claims and Workforce Composition and Job Characteristics in Ontario, Canada
We examined associations between workforce demographics and job characteristics, grouped by industrial sector, and declines in workers’ compensation claim rates in Ontario, Canada, between 1990 and 2003. Gender, age, occupation, and job tenure were predictors for claim rates in 12 industrial sectors. The decline in claims was significantly associated with a decline in the proportion of employment in occupations with high physical demands. These f…
Testing a New Theory of Patient Satisfaction With Treatment Outcome
OBJECTIVES: Theories of patient satisfaction with treatment outcome have not been developed and tested in healthcare settings. The objectives of this study were to test a new theory linking patient satisfaction and embodiment (body--self unity) and examine it in relation to other competing theories. DESIGN: We conducted a prospective cohort study. SETTING: This study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital. PATIENTS: We studied 122 individuals …
