Correlates of reproductive coercion among women of reproductive age in Kingston, Jamaica and Hanoi, Vietnam
We sought to identify the correlates of reproductive coercion (RC) among women in Kingston, Jamaica and Hanoi, Vietnam. We completed a secondary analysis of two cross-sectional datasets in September 2022: 1) a study of 222 women, 18–25 years of age, attending a clinic in Kingston, Jamaica in 2018–2019 and 2) a study of 500 women, 18–45 years of age, receiving care at a hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam in 2017–2018. Shared eligibility criteria between t…
Clinic Adaptations and Changes in Abortion Use After Dobbs in Illinois, July 2021–June 2023
Objectives. To assess changes in abortion service delivery in Illinois after the Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision. Methods. We used data from a monthly survey of 2 Illinois abortion providers that provide half of Illinois’s abortions. We collected data from 2021 to 2023 on abortion counts, overall and stratified by method, gestation duration, and patient state. We compared pre- and post- Dobbs findings. Results. A total of 24 …
Examining Post- Dobbs Changes in Abortion Use at 3 Southern Michigan Clinics, July 2021‒June 2023
Objectives. To examine changes in abortion service delivery for the years before (July 2021‒June 2022) and after Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health (July 2022‒June 2023) at 3 Planned Parenthood clinics in southern Michigan, when several states enacted laws further restricting abortion access, and Michigan became a destination for individuals in restrictive states. Methods. We used monthly abortion data from 3 Michigan clinics to calculate the mean nu…
Longitudinal Impact of Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization on Abortion Service Delivery in Ohio, 2022‒2023
Objectives. To assess the impact of Ohio’s abortion policy changes on abortion provision following Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Methods. We analyzed quantitative and write-in responses from an ongoing survey of 6 abortion facilities in Ohio for 3 time periods: January‒June 2022 (pre- Dobbs), July‒September 2022 (6-week ban in effect), and October 2022‒June 2023 (post- Dobbs, ban blocked). We disaggregated counts by method, gestati…
“I know my body and I just can't get pregnant that easily” – Women's use and non-use of the injection to manage fertility
women use the injection to achieve their desired family size. In 2018, we conducted 20 in-depth interviews with women who were part of a cohort study in rural Malawi. Interviews focused on contraceptive decision-making. Data were indexed (summarized) and coded using narrative, process, and thematic codes. Women described the importance of knowing about their "natural" fertility by having children prior to ever using contraception because women co…
Messages around contraceptive use and implications in rural Malawi
The unmet need for contraception in Malawi remains high, despite progress increasing knowledge and access over the past two decades. Understanding the reasons for this unmet need is critical to programme planning and service delivery. In this study, we conducted 30 in-depth interviews and 13 focus group discussions with women and men in rural Malawi to understand social, cultural and relational barriers and facilitators to contraceptive use. We f…
Individual and community-level impact of infertility-related stigma in Malawi
An investigation of the relationship between autonomy, childbirth practices, and obstetric fistula among women in rural Lilongwe District, Malawi
BACKGROUND: Obstetric fistula is a childbirth injury caused by prolonged obstructed labor that results in destruction of the tissue wall between the vagina and bladder. Although obstetric fistula is directly caused by prolonged obstructed labor, many other factors indirectly increase fistula risk. Some research suggests that many women in rural Malawi have limited autonomy and decision-making power in their households. We hypothesize that women's…
Missed Opportunities in Neonatal Deaths in Rwanda
Does state-level context matter for individuals' knowledge about abortion, legality and health? Challenging the ‘red states v. blue states’ hypothesis
Recently, the hypothesis that state-level political context influences individuals' cultural values--the 'red states v. blue states' hypothesis--has been invoked to explain the hyper-polarisation of politics in the USA. To test this hypothesis, we examined individuals' knowledge about abortion in relation to the political context of their current state of residence. Drawing from an internet-survey of 586 reproductive-age individuals in the USA, w…
