Evaluating the Effects of Capacity Building Initiatives and Primary Care Networks in Singapore
The high tertiary healthcare utilisation in Singapore due to an ageing population and increasing chronic disease load has resulted in the establishment of primary care networks (PCNs) for private general practitioners (GPs) to provide team-based, community care for chronic diseases. A total of 22 PCN leaders and programme managers from 10 PCNs participated in online group discussions and a survey. Outcome harvesting was used to retrospectively li…
The associations between caregivers’ psychosocial characteristics and caregivers’ depressive symptoms in stroke settings
The study identified subjective burden, quality of care-relationship and expressive social support as significantly associated with caregivers' depressive symptoms. Caregivers' communication skills may also play a role in reducing caregivers' depressive symptoms
Relicensing Practices of Taxi Drivers and Crane Operators Aged 70 Years and above in Singapore
Singapore is a rapidly ageing society, underpinned by national policies to promote successful and active ageing. Whilst older worker participation in the workforce is encouraged, policymakers are challenged to ensure that work competency is not compromised with any normal age- and/or health-related changes. This paper will briefly outline how policymakers responded to the needs of two subgroups of older workers aged 70 years and above (taxi drive…
Examining the Influence of Social Interactions and Community Resources on Caregivers’ Burden in Stroke Settings
Since the introduction of the integrated care model, understanding how social interactions and community resources can alleviate caregivers' burden is vital to minimizing negative patients' outcomes. This study ( n = 214) examined the associations between these factors and caregivers' burden in stroke settings. It used 3-month and 1-year post-stroke data collected from five tertiary hospitals. Subjective and objective caregivers' burdens were mea…
Burden of informal care in stroke survivors and its determinants
Informal care burden remains high up to 12-months post-stroke. Factors such as functional dependency, stroke severity, informal caregiver gender and co-caring with foreign domestic workers were associated with informal care burden
Patients with more comorbidities have better detection of chronic conditions, but poorer management and control
Patients with more comorbidities have better diagnosis of chronic conditions, but this does not translate into better management and control of these conditions. Patients with multiple NCDs are high users of health services and are at an increased risk of adverse health outcomes. Hence, improving their access to care is a priority for healthcare systems
Implications of multimorbidity patterns on health care utilisation and quality of life in middle-income countries
BACKGROUND: Past studies have demonstrated how single non-communicable diseases (NCDs) affect health care utilisation and quality of life (QoL), but not how different NCD combinations interact to affect these. Our study aims to investigate the prevalence of NCD dyad and triad combinations, and the implications of different NCD dyad combinations on health care utilisation and QoL. METHODS: Our study utilised cross-sectional data from the WHO SAGE …
Factors affecting dental service utilisation among older Singaporeans eligible for subsidized dental care – a qualitative study
Our study provided important insights regarding oral health perceptions and beliefs of older people residing in the community which may affect their dental service utilization. This further highlights the importance of understanding the concerns of this group when implementing healthcare policies for elderly in Singapore. The findings of our study will serve as a baseline for future studies in Singapore and inform studies in other countries that …
Voluntary community service in medical school
PURPOSE: In medical school, students may participate in various community involvement projects (CIP), which serve disadvantaged communities. However, several obstacles may arise during these projects. The authors conducted a qualitative study with the primary aim of understanding the obstacles and corresponding potential solutions when medical students in Singapore participate in local CIP (LCIP) and overseas CIP (OCIP). DESIGN: The authors recru…
