The research I shall be discussing in this paper is not new. My approach to language acquisition has evolved gradually in the course of studying my own children’s development, since about 1971. What I shall attempt to do here is to spell out some of the implications for speech therapy
What's the use of imitation
Attitudes towards imitation have been coloured by theoretical disputes about the nature of language. But even if language is rule-governed, children may be helped by imitation to discover the rules. This paper reviews evidence for and against imitation as a factor in the acquisition of syntax. Performing without competence
Speech in children should be viewed as a developing skill. During acquisition the child becomes increasingly capable of organizing linguistic structure at a number of different levels concurrently. One boy seemed to have strategies for simplifying the tasks of speech reception and production. Comprehension and production in language acquisition
Susan Ervin-Tripp has remarked that she ‘would like to see more done on the comprehension side of development,’ and that ‘this is something that we are still in very serions ignorance about’ (1971). Despite this ignorance it seems to be a widely held view that comprehension develops in advance of production, but the authors feel that this whole question is in need of close analysis
