Decision Making in Nursing Home Placement
This manuscript reports the results of an ethnographic study to describe the process rural families used to make nursing home placement decisions. A total of 16 rural family and elder interviews revealed that 3/4 of the decision makers and care givers were women, making decisions for (or with) elder parents or parents-in-law. This paper uses UCCA statistics to examine changes in the demand for entry to university education by mature students in the period 1974–80, in terms of numbers of applications, subject choice and chance of success in application. This is a study of ‘unqualified ̊s mature applicants to the University of Sheffield who succeeded in gaining a place by means of the Joint Matriculation Board special scheme in 1975, 1976 and 1977.
