  • Découvertes de fragments de navire (Saint-Gervais 9) sur les plages Saint-Gervais et du Cavaou, à Fos-sur-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhône)

    Open Access•Sabrina Marlier, Frédéric Guibal•ARTICLE•Archaeonautica•2024

  • An absolute radiocarbon chronology for the world heritage site of Sarvestan (SW Iran)

Open Access•Morteza Djamali, Manuela Capano et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2022•Citada por: 2•Referências: 21

This study presents a new precise radiocarbon chronology for the World Heritage site of Sarvestan (SW Iran). The monument is a key construction in the history of architecture because it is a typical Sasanian construction built during the late Sasanian or early Islamic period. Previous attempts to date the monument have suggested the ages ranging from the middle Sasanian (fifth century CE) to early Abbasid (ninth century CE) era. These age estimat…

  • Preliminary results of the wood analyses of the Roman vessels of Caska, island of Pag, Croatia

Open Access•Alba Ferreira Domínguez, Frédéric Guibal et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeonautica•2021

Two assemblages compose the scuttled Roman vessels discovered in Caska inlet (Pag Island, Croatia): three sewn boats (Caska 1, 3 and 4) and one mortise-and-tenon constructed ship (Caska 2). While the wood species used for the construction of the sewn boats are quite similar (beech trunks split radially for planking), the construction of Caska 2 shows greater heterogeneity and more common use of conifer species for planking. The systematic identif…

  • An overview of three decades of dendrochronology applied to ancient Mediterranean shipwrecks in southeastern France

Open Access•Frédéric Guibal, Alba Ferreira Domínguez et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeonautica•2021

Three decades of dendrochronology applied to ancient Mediterranean shipwrecks in southeastern France have resulted in a considerable improvement in knowledge about the wood resources used in ancient shipbuilding. However, in terms of dating, the success rate of dendrochronological analyses is still very low. The possible causes of this low rate are discussed through two case studies: the first pertaining to the shipwrecks from the ancient harbour…

Subfossil trees with their annual rings constitute the most accurate and precise archive to calibrate the radiocarbon ( 14 C) method. The Holocene part of the IntCal curve is based on tree-ring chronologies, absolutely dated by dendrochronological matching. For the Northern Hemisphere, the absolute curve starts at 12,325 cal BP. For the early part of the Younger Dryas (YD) climatic event (≈ 12,850–11,650 cal BP), there are only a few floating den…

Postglacial expansion of deciduous oak woodlands of the Zagros—Anti-Taurus Mountains, a major biome of the Near East, was delayed until the middle Holocene at ~6300 cal. yr BP. The current hypotheses explain this delay as a consequence of a regional aridity during the early Holocene, slow migration rates of forest trees, and/or a long history of land use and agro-pastoralism in this region. In the present paper, support is given to a hypothesis t…
