This article describes the WHO 'healthy urban planning' (HUP) initiative as it has developed through the laboratory of the Healthy Cities movement and evaluates the degree to which applicant cities successfully developed plans for HUP. The paper provides a brief historical perspective on the relationship of health and planning and an overview of the ways in which urban spatial development affects health. A health map for the local human habitat
At the 2006 UK Public Health Association Conference, held in Telford in March, and the International HIA conference in Cardiff in the same month, there was much interest in a new model of health determinants applied to the planning of human settlements. This ‘health map’ is presented here in its current form for the first time. The authors explain its purpose.

The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) has been developed from a six-country WHO collaborative project as a screening instrument for hazardous and harmful alcohol consumption. Vegetation Patterns Associated With Certain Aboriginal Stone Circles in the Eastern Powder River Basin, Wyoming
Intuitive observations of vegetation patterns inside a number of aboriginal stone circles in the eastern Powder River Basin, Wyoming, led to the implementation of a limited research project. Data on the nature of species cover inside 15 randomly selected stone circles were collected and compared with the normal species cover for the surrounding vegetation zone.
