  • Teacher engagement in professional learning

Keely Harper‐Hill, Wendi Beamish et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Continuing Education•2022

Certain characteristics of teacher professional learning opportunities are known to promote engagement by teachers; however, the successful translation of new knowledge into inclusive teaching practice remains challenging. A greater understanding of teacher motivation for engagement with professional learning opportunities may assist in understanding why particular opportunities result in changes in teacher practices. Within the co-design process…

  • Pedagogies of Discomfort and Care

    Open Access•Fin Cullen, Michael Whelan•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2021

This reflective paper explores the emotions, ethics, and challenges of facilitating training for youth practitioners to tackle gender-related violence (GRV). This paper draws on insights from a training intervention that emerged from an EU-funded feminist project (UK GAPWORK project), which sought to bring together approaches to tackle violence against women and girls with challenging heteronormativity and homophobia. Drawing on accounts from fac…

As Australian institutions shift towards widening participation in higher education, recent research has strengthened the notion that institutions must challenge their own values to find ways of recognising and sharing the values of more diverse cohorts. This pilot study acknowledges the call for universities to move ‘away from the notion that it is the students who need to “adapt” to university' and implements these recommendations through the d…

  • The entitled ally

    Bryce Hadley, Morgan Batch et al.•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2020•Referências: 3

Theatre has a long tradition of presenting disabled characters as plot devices to tell someone else’s story. A recent production, All in a Row, resulted in heated debate around this issue. This article examines not the play itself, but the conflict between those who objected to the play’s representation of autism, and its creators, who defended their choices by citing their disability-adjacent identities and processes of consultation. For critics…

  • All together now

Open Access•Michael Whelan, Christina Renda et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2020•Referências: 8

Our novel person-based integrated surveillance dataset represents a platform for ongoing in-depth assessment of disease overlaps such as the relative timing of disease records. It enables a more client-focused approach, is a step towards improved characterization of syndemics in Ontario, and could inform other jurisdictions interested in adopting similar approaches

  • Getting a grippe on severity

Open Access•J Leigh Hobbs, Michael Whelan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

In our retrospective analyses we found that hospital data provided a reliable estimate of the trends of influenza-related hospitalizations and deaths compared to the reportable disease data for the 2010-11 to 2013-14 influenza seasons in Ontario, but may under-estimate the total seasonal number of deaths. Hospital data could be used for retrospective end-of-season assessments of severity, but due to delays in data availability are unlikely to be …

Open Access•Rachel Savage, Michael Whelan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Secondary attack rates for pandemic influenza A (H1N1) were comparable to seasonal influenza estimates suggesting similarities in transmission. High secondary attack rates in children provide additional support for increased susceptibility to infection

Charles Beard was arguably the most influential historian in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. He was also a key figure in the theoretical conceptualization of social studies education. The vision of social studies he recommended for schools, which he articulated most thoroughly during the 1930s white serving on the American Historical Associations's Commission of the Social Studies, was influenced greatly by his n…

Albert Bushnell Hart was a leading figure during a critical period in the development of history education in the United States. Throughout his career as a professor of history and government at Harvard University (1883–1926), he made many contributions, arguably more than anyone else of his generation, to history's emergence as a modern school subject and to its inclusion as a core component of the school curriculum. In doing so, he helped fashi…

The recommendation of both the Bradley Commission and the National Commission on Social Studies that the study of history should form the core of the social studies curriculum has intensified the long-standing debate among educators about the nature of social studies education. This article is a response to three of the sharpest critiques of recommendation: first, that a history-centered curriculum is an ideologically conservative idea; second, t…
