Domestic Violence Shelters’ Efforts to Prevent Teen Dating Violence
This research note reports data from a national survey of 213 domestic violence shelters regarding their teen dating violence (TDV) prevention efforts. More than half of the shelters reported that they provide TDV programing to at least 1/2 of the high schools in their communities; about 1/3 of shelters provide TDV programming to parents. Dating Violence Policy
Dating violence rates affect an unacceptably high percentage of youth. This paper tests a model to understand the considerable variation in state dating violence policy comprehensiveness. Independent variables in the model are state political culture, partisan control of political institutions, prevalence of dating violence, and median household income. Objective A theatrical sexual assault prevention program presented by social work students on an urban university campus was evaluated to assess its influence on attitude change of audience attendees. Method A quasi-experimental pretest, posttest, follow-up group design using a sample of 100 participants and a comparison group of 64 was implemented to evaluate the program's effectiveness. This article reports on a study of the relationship between students' attitudes toward women and toward gay men and lesbians and changes in those attitudes during social work courses at two universities. The study found a significant relationship between students' levels of homophobia and sexism. Volunteers Who Work with Survivors of Rape and Battering
This study reports on a survey of female and male volunteers in rape crisis centers and shelters for battered women concerning various aspects of their volunteer experiences. We found that for both men and women the psychic or altruistic reasons for volunteering (i.e., to help others) were most important, followed by the political motivation of helping to stop the problem of rape or battering.
