The present study discusses the Hebrew chronicle Divre Yosef by the seventeenth-century Egyptian Jewish author Joseph Sambari. This chronicle, a history of the Jews in the Islamic world, is prefaced by a lengthy introduction to the origins of Islam in which Sambari employs biblical allusions and midrashim that result in a subversive subtext designed to be decoded solely by a Jewish audience trained in that tradition. Measures of life crisis, manifest distress and maladaptive coping were used to predict future illness behavior in male college students. A group of 92 Ss was screened by an internist's examination as being free from disease, and was administered a series of self-ratings measuring the above dimensions. One year later, 79 of these students were available to be recontacted and were asked to describe their health records during the intervening time; …
Psychologic Aspects of Cigarette Smoking in Men
Heavy cigarette smoking in men is theorized to be associated with an oralimpulsive personality constellation. Clinical interviews with 130 subjects, representing non-, former, mild and heavy smokers, supported previous questionnaire findings that the latter group is characterized by features of: defiance, impulsiveness, danger-seeking, neurotic emotional lability and oral preoccupation. Life situations characterized by failure, unresolved role crisis, and social isolation were hypothesized to be associated with the presence of respiratory illness. A study was made of 106 male college students who sought medical care for respiratory difficulties. In order of severity of dysfunctioning, 16 were found to have neurotic disorders; 14, asthma; serious upper-respiratory infection manifested by symptoms of sore throat, 50; and 26, seaso…
