  • Did marginal propensities to consume change with the housing boom and bust

Open Access•Yunho Cho, James Morley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Econometrics•2024

We extend a widely used semi‐structural model to identify and estimate dynamic consumption elasticities with respect to transitory income shocks. Applying our model to household survey data, we find a structural break in marginal propensities to consume following the end of the housing market boom, with the average across households increasing significantly. There is important heterogeneity by different household balance sheet characteristics, an…

  • Why Has the U.S. Economy Stagnated since the Great Recession

Open Access•Yunjong Eo, James Morley•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2022

Since the Great Recession in 2007–2009, U.S. real GDP has failed to return to its previously projected path, a phenomenon widely associated with secular stagnation. We investigate whether this stagnation was due to hysteresis effects from the Great Recession, a persistent negative output gap following the recession, or slower trend growth for other reasons. To do so, we develop a new Markov-switching time series model of output growth that accomm…

  • Estimating household consumption insurance

Open Access•Arpita Chatterjee, James Morley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Econometrics•2021

Blundell, Pistaferri, and Preston ( American Economic Review , 2008, 98(5), 1887–1921) report an estimate of household consumption insurance with respect to permanent income shocks of 36%. In replicating findings for their model and data, we find that this estimate is distorted by a code error and is not robust to weighting scheme for generalized method of moments (GMM) or consideration of quasi maximum likelihood estimation (QMLE), which produce…

  • The Emergence of Phenomenological Psychology in the United States

Scott D Churchill, Christopher M Aanstoos et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Phenomenological…•2021

This essay strives to bring together the institutional history of phenomenological psychology within the American academy from the middle of the 20th century to the current moment. Although phenomenological psychology has always been a dynamically international and interdisciplinary movement, the scope of this essay is limited to the different ways in which this new field expressed itself in certain psychology departments and educational institut…

  • Intuitive and Reliable Estimates of the Output Gap from a Beveridge-Nelson Filter

Open Access•Güneş Kamber, James Morley et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2018

The Beveridge-Nelson decomposition based on autoregressive models produces estimates of the output gap that are strongly at odds with widely held beliefs about transitory movements in economic activity. This is due to parameter estimates implying a high signal-to-noise ratio in terms of the variance of trend shocks as a fraction of the overall forecast error variance. When we impose a lower signal-to-noise ratio, the resulting Beveridge-Nelson fi…

  • The Asymmetric Business Cycle

James Morley, Jeremy Piger•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2012

The business cycle is a fundamental yet elusive concept in macroeconomics. In this paper, we consider the problem of measuring the business cycle. First, we argue for the output-gap view that the business cycle corresponds to transitory deviations in economic activity away from a permanent, or trend, level. Then we investigate the extent to which a general model-based approach to estimating trend and cycle for the U.S. economy leads to measures o…

  • Embodied Consciousness in Tantric Yoga and the Phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty

    James Morley•ARTICLE•Religion and the Arts•2008•Citada por: 5

Yoga, the ancient inter-religious thread running through all Indian Spirituality, shares a remarkable congruence with twentieth-century phenomenology. But this conjuncture is not based on a common aspiration of "transcendence from the world," as argued by previous comparisons. Instead, by applying the more advanced Existential Phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty to the more indigenous Tantric stream of yoga, it will be shown that this congruen…

  • The Structural Break in the Equity Premium

Chang-Jin Kim, Chang‐Jin Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2005

This article uses Bayesian marginal likelihood analysis to compare univariate models of the stock return behavior and test for structural breaks in the equity premium. The analysis favors a model that relates the equity premium to Markov-switching changes in the level of market volatility and accommodates volatility feedback. For this model, there is evidence of a one-time structural break in the equity premium in the 1940s, with no evidence of a…

  • Why Are the Beveridge-Nelson and Unobserved-Components Decompositions of GDP So Different

James Morley, James C Morley et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2003

This paper reconciles two widely used decompositions of GDP into trend and cycle that yield starkly different results. The Beveridge-Nelson (BN) decomposition implies that a stochastic trend accounts for most of the variation in output, whereas the unobserved-components (UC) implies cyclical variation is dominant. Which is correct has broad implications for the relative importance of real versus nominal shocks. We show the difference arises from …

  • The Sleeping Subject

    Open Access•James Morley•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•1999

This paper presents the place of dreaming in Merleau-Ponty's thought. It elicits the view of dreaming developed in three seminal texts: Phenomenology of Perception, the passivity fragment from the Themes from the Lectures at the College de France, and The Visible and the Invisible. In each of these texts, Merleau-Ponty releases dreaming from the secondary status conventionally granted to it in relation to waking perception, and maintains, instead…

  • Holistic biology and the organismic foundations of humanistic psychology

    James Morley•ARTICLE•The Humanistic Psychologist•1995

This article traces the biological foundations essential to humanistic psychology. It presents, as an alternative to the biochemical emphasis in mainstream biology, the long‐neglected holistic paradigm that developed out of the vitalist tradition in biology. After a review of the historical course of this alternative stream of scientific thought, this article focuses on Kurt Goldstein's organismic paradigm. Specifically, the distinction between G…
