A park of the people
Platt National Park, Oklahoma, was the smallest national park in the United States until it was combined with an adjacent, reservoir-centered recreation site in 1976 to form Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Set aside as Sulphur Springs Reservation by agreement with the Chickasaw Indians in 1902 and designated a national park in 1906, Platt is the only American national park to be demoted since World War II. The story of Platt's creation and de…
Biogeography in the Annals
Biogeography has been consistently well represented in the Annals throughout the Association of American Geographers' first century. This sample of biogeographic research effectively illustrates the persistent questions explored by the subdiscipline as well as changes in the intellectual perspectives taken on them. Four fundamental issues occupied biogeographers throughout this period (spatial pattern and process, landscape change, human modifica…
The Influence of Complex Systems Interactions on Barrier Island Dune Vegetation Pattern and Process
Studies of dune vegetation patterns have emphasized two structuring agents: local environmental gradients that shape the prominent zonation of coastal plant species, and disturbance patches initiated by overwash during coastal storms. For dune systems of two barrier islands in the Georgia Bight, we investigate how the interplay of these two conceptual frames generate patterns in (1) longitudinal (along-shore) and transverse (across-shore) composi…
Disturbance-Mediated Variation in Stand Structure between Varieties of Pinus clausa (Sand Pine)
Geographically mediated differences in exposure to disturbance agents that operate at different scales impose demographic contrasts between plant populations. We examined such effects on the stand-scale population structure of the two varieties of Pinus clausa (sand pine). Pinus clausa var. immuginata stands of the Florida panhandle exhibited reverse-J diameter and age structures, with ongoing stem recruitment and relatively high seedling and sap…
Vertebrate Feeding Guilds in California’s Sierra Nevada
In biogeography, as in other parts of physical geography, it has become conventional wisdom to assert that a change in the scale of analysis necessitates a change in explanatory factors. In this article, we present an empirical study at a regional scale and compare the results to earlier data analyzed at a subcontinental scale. We describe the spatial patterns of vertebrates, characterized by taxonomic Classes and feeding guilds, on the west slop…
Structural Variation and Dynamics of Lodgepole Pine Forests in Lassen Volcanic National Park, California
Diameter structure, age/diameter regressions, and stem dispersion patterns reveal spatial variability in lodgepole pine (Pinus contorla) forest structure and dynamics in Lassen Volcanic National Park, California (LVNP). Spatial variability in this early successional species within the LVNP landscape is linked with environmental influences (especially effects of cold-air drainage and substrate fertility), biotic interactions (relative success of m…
Bird Communities and Vegetation Structure in the United States
The composition of breeding-bird communities, as represented by the relative importance of foraging guilds, is different for vegetation of differing structures. We identified seven vegetation types and the character of the bird community associated with each. Desert shrub has birds with generalist feeding habits, grasslands have species that are primarily seed-eaters, and nondesert brush vegetation supports generalists and seed-eaters that feed o…
Rotc Programs and Negro Youth
Detailed and pertinent evaluations trace the course of development of each youth who trains and qualifies for a commission in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. records of these evaluations go into military channels and are infrequently brought forth by research scholars or by administrators for their general academic applicability. Current problem situations, particularly as regards the Negro youth, make increasingly valuable much extant data…
