  • Microstructural Study of Medieval Crucible Steels from Archaeological Sites in Central and Northwest Asia

    N M Zinyakov•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2024

  • Microstructural Study of Medieval Crucible Steels from Archaeological Sites in Central and Northwest Asia

    Open Access•N M Zinyakov•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2024•Referências: 6

The microstructure of 9th–15th century artifacts made of crucible steel, found at sites in Central and Northwest Asia, is described. Metallographic study of items from settlements and burials with precise data on chronology, location, and accompanying artifacts is important for reconstructing the history of bulat steel and the technology of melting and processing ultra-high-carbon crucible steel. The study of the macro- and microstructure, and th…

  • Weaponry of the upper Taz River Selkups according to metallographic studies (based on mate-rials from the Kikki-Akki burial ground)

    Open Access•N M Zinyakov, O E Poshekhonova•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2024•Referências: 4

The paper presents the analysis of the weaponry items (108 arrowheads, 2 spearheads, and 2 glaive heads) recovered from the 17th-19th cc. burial ground of Kikki-Akki (Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Taz River) of the Upper Taz Selkups, aiming at the reconstruction of the technology of their production. With the aid of the methods of metallographic analysis, it has been established that the production of ferrous metal weapons was carried out by pr…

  • Technological characteristics of objects made of iron and iron-carbon alloys associated with the Yudino Culture (according to the metallographic data)

    Open Access•N M Zinyakov, E A Tret''Iakov•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2022•Referências: 6

Towards the beginning of the 2nd millennium CE, the population of Western Siberia had achieved significant progress in the production and processing of ferrous metals. This is especially well demonstrated by the com-plexes of the 10th-13th centuries in the Lower Irtysh River area (Western Siberia) and Lower Ob River area (Western Siberia) (archaeological sites of the Ust-Ishim and Nizhneobskaya Cultures), whose materials allowed tracing a unified…

  • Cultural and Technological Characteristics of Russian Forged Iron Tools from the Selkup Cemetery Migalka in the Middle Ob Basin

    Open Access•L A Chindina, N M Zinyakov•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2020•Citada por: 1

This study addresses Russian iron artifacts from the Narym Selkup cemetery Migalka, dating to the late 1600s to early 1700s. Two most important categories of tools are described—knives and axes. In terms of morphology, knives fall into two groups: straight-backed and those with convex (“humped”) backs. The combination of a “humpbacked” blade, typical of native manufacture, and Russian hilt plates precludes an unambiguous ethnic attribution. Speci…

  • Technological Research Into the Metal Attributes Of the Northern Selkup Shaman Costume Of the Xvii-xviii Centuries

    Open Access•N M Zinyakov, O E Poshekhonova•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2020•Referências: 1

To reconstruct the technological methods and technical achievements of Northern Selkup blacksmiths, the components of the Northern Selkup shaman costume, which is composed of ferrous metal, were studied using metallographic analysis methods. The materials were found in two graves in a Kikki-Akki burial ground from the XVII-XVIII centuries (Western Siberia, Taz river). It was found that the basic raw materials for production were unevenly carboniz…

  • Forged products by Russian craftsmen of the 17th-19th centuries on the basis of materials from the Kikki-Akki burial ground of Upper Taz Selkups

    Open Access•N M Zinyakov, O E Poshekhonova•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

The article studies the technology of making iron and steel items of Russian origin, discovered in the Kikki-Akki burial ground of Northern Selkups (18th-19th centuries) in the north of Western Siberia in the upper reaches of the Taz River. In the study, we established the origin and chronology of Russian industrial goods in Western Siberia, as well as factors under the influence of which they appeared among the indigenous Siberian population. We…

  • Metal Forge Products at the Maray 1 Hillfort

    Open Access•N M Zinyakov, I Tsembalyuk•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2019•Citada por: 3

The article considers the problem of the origin of iron-processing production in the Tobol-Ishim interfluve during the Early Iron Age, which has yet to be fully studied. The absence of iron items in the monumental materials of the beginning of the Early Iron Age meant that questions concerning iron processing methods, sources of the metal and the time of the origin of the ferrous metallurgy in this territory were not raised. Until now, it was bel…
