This review on English language teaching (ELT) in Singapore examines 159 empirical research studies published between 2017 and 2023 in both internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals and less well-known regional journals. The effect of a School Street intervention on children’s active travel, satisfaction with their street, and perception of road safety
We saw very limited evidence that School Streets affected children's perceptions of feeling safe, liking their school road, identifying themselves as frequent active travellers; there was some evidence for reductions in self-reported active travel. A novel finding is the sense of solidarity and community cohesion that School Streets elicits. This article is a review of research in English language education (ELE) in multilingual Singapore from 2010 to 2020. Most research activity has been in the areas of reading and writing while the least has been in speaking and listening and learning spaces. Girls Becoming Mathematicians
This paper focusses on the process of learning mathematics in primary school from the perspectives of 62 girls aged seven to eleven. For many of these Singaporean girls, English is not the dominant home language, but they all learn mathematics in English. Focusing on academia, which we view as a classed and gendered field, we draw on Bourdieu and feminist standpoint theory to account for how we, as women of working‐class origin, have experienced ‘breaches' through which we have come to understand ourselves in classed and gendered terms.
