Leisure constraints associated with family recreation at parks and beaches, as perceived by parents of children with autism spectrum disorder
Exploring VFR travel intentions during Covid-19
Southern hospitality' in Charleston, South Carolina
‘Southern hospitality' is a central pillar of tourism and culture in the southern U.S. Traditionally associated with a rural, southern style of politeness, it is unclear how this regional form of hospitality is influenced by externally-driven growth. Also, some perceive it as a romanticized myth built upon racial injustice. This study explored the meanings of southern hospitality in Charleston, South Carolina, a rapidly growing city that has beco…
Political attitudes and Plog's travel personality model
This research, conducted during the COVID‐19 pandemic, applied Stanley Plog's seminal tourism Model of Allocentricity and Psychocentricity and discovered surprising relationships between one's Plog classification and their political attitudes and travel behaviors during the crisis. Though expecting Plog's Allocentrics to have the more politically liberal views and Psychocentrics to be more conservative, we found the opposite to be true. Two previ…
International travel and political views
This research note considers the relationship between international travel experience and one's political views. The findings reveal that those who travel internationally have strongly differentiated views from those who do not, but that these are neither necessarily more liberal nor conservative than those who have not traveled abroad
A multidisciplinary marketing profile of motorcycle tourists
This study advances a multidisciplinary marketing profile of US motorcycle tourists. The research analyses theoretical motivation measures from leisure, psychological and sociological sciences and descriptive attributes of motorcycle tourists’ travel preferences. Findings suggest that motorcycle tourists are motivated by their desire for personal escape, experiencing the flow state while riding, and transit routes congruent with their noninstitut…
Willingness to pay for environmentally linked clothing at an event
Apparel and the attributes they portray have an opportunity to influence the willingness to pay (WTP) of those who purchase them. While there have been a number of studies examining WTP, few examine purchases in a festival setting. The goal of this study was to explore participants’ WTP for apparel based on a more external motivation (visible environmental message) and/or an internal motivation (environmentally sustainable certification) at a fes…

Conceptualizing the Impact of Geographical Ignorance on Online Trip Planning
In this study, 28 participants with little geographical knowledge of the destination were asked to plan a week-long trip to China online. The participants were asked to create a detailed seven-day itinerary outline with activities or attractions they would like to participate in or visit, as well as restaurants in which they would like to dine. The participants were given a computer with internet access to conduct an online search to complete thi…
Interpreting urban space through cognitive map sketching and sequence analysis
Traditionally, analysis of sketch maps of urban areas has focused on the interpretation of hand‐drawn renditions of features that are most familiar to individuals. Few researchers have investigated the sequence that sketchers use to identify features on the urban landscape and how these features are linked together to form a coherent ‘picture’ of an area. This article builds upon previous research by exploring the sequential pattern of sketch map…

A Geographical Analysis of the Rates of Non-Travel Across the Regions of Canada
The purpose of this study was to classify and segment non-travellers across the regions of Canada. This was achieved by empirically testing Haukeland's (1990) Haukeland, V. J. 1990. Non-travellers: The flip side of motivation. Annals of Tourism Research, 17: 172–184. [CSA][CROSSREF][Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar] model of non-travel. The study revealed that while Quebec had the lowest incidence rate of non-travel, those who did …
