A Systems Thinking Approach to Political Polarization and Encounters of Dysrecognition
In this article, we employ a Batesonian systems thinking approach to analyze politically polarized and politically polarizing encounters in the contemporary United States. We bring together Bateson’s concepts of schismogenesis, double binds, metacommunication, and transcontextualism with recent work on recognition and resonance in order to show how these encounters create moments of transcontextual double binds that produce mutual dysrecognition.…

We advance an anthropological approach to human visual experience that opposes reductive conceptions founded on notions of historically and socio-culturally abstract and unsituated subjects. Instead, we propose that vision is part of an ongoing semiotic relation between seeing subjects and visual contexts that are not just psychological but also socio-historical and cultural. The resonance of seen things
What follows is an exploration of an experience of seeing. The experience of interest here is the seeing of Our Lady of the Underpass, a Marian apparition that was seen in an underpass in Chicago in early 2005. Taking the images and objects brought to the make-shift shrine as clues, we explore the constitutive poetic resonances ingredient to this seeing. Cultural Differences in Patients’ Preferences for Paternalism
Following up on previous research demonstrating the high level of care realized by a paternalistic Mexican physician, the present research further explored the hypothesis that there are cultural differences in preferences for and experiences with physician paternalism vs. patient autonomy in White American culture as compared with Mexican culture. In this article we critically evaluate the case made by proponents of academic language (AL) that AL is functionally necessary for schooling due to specific functional advantages of AL. We consider three examples of AL introduced by AL proponents in order to show (1) that AL proponents have been too quick to accept the ALH, (2) that functional advantages of AL can be accomplished with non-AL varieties and 3) that AL may, in fact, be dysfunctional…

Can Physicians Demonstrate High Quality Care Using Paternalistic Practices? A Case Study of Paternalism in Latino Physician-Patient Interactions
We argue that patient autonomy is a cultural value specific to Western culture and that the autonomy focus in U.S. health care may produce negative patient outcomes for patients from other cultures.
