  • Orofacial Clefts and Maternal Risk Factors

Open Access•Michele Santoro, Lorena Mezzasalma et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2024

We found an association of OFCs with lower maternal age. The association with maternal age remains controversial and further epidemiological evidence is needed through multicenter studies. We observed that CL was more common in underweight mothers, suggesting actions of primary prevention

  • Hypothyroidism in Patients with Down Syndrome

Open Access•Francesca Gorini, Alessio Coi et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2024

This population-based study aimed to assess the prevalence of congenital hypothyroidism (CH) and overt hypothyroidism (OH) and their association with congenital heart defects (CHDs) in patients with Down syndrome (DS). The population included all live births residing in Tuscany (Italy) diagnosed with DS recorded in the Registry of Congenital Defects and in the Registry of Rare Diseases of Tuscany in the years 2003-2017. • The Association of Prenatal Diagnoses with Mortality and Long-Term Morbidity in Children with Specific Isolated Congenital Anomalies

Open Access•Anna Heino, Joan K Morris et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2024

Our findings do not show improved outcomes for prenatally diagnosed infants. For conditions where prenatal diagnoses were associated with greater mortality and morbidity, the findings might be attributed to increased detection of more severe anomalies. The increased mortality and morbidity in those diagnosed prenatally may be related to the lower mean gestational age (GA) at birth, leading to insufficient surfactant for respiratory effort. This i…

  • Women's participation and social demands in the Italian 1960s

    Michele Santoro•ARTICLE•Women s History Review•2024

The National Council of Italian Women (CNDI) was an internationally-oriented confederation of women's associations founded in Rome in 1903, which was affiliated with the International Council of Women (ICW). Previous studies on the Italian Council have considered its origins and the biographical aspects of its members in the first half of twentieth-century Italy, while the Council developments and action during the democratic regime of the second…

  • Profile of Drug Utilization in Patients with Rare Diseases in Tuscany, Italy

Open Access•Francesca Gorini, Michele Santoro et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Patients with rare diseases (RDs) generally have delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis, which lead to inappropriate care or the need to modify treatment during the course of the disease. The medical care of RD patients can be further complicated by the presence of comorbidities. In this population-based study, we evaluated the prevalence, intensity of use, and consumption of drugs prescribed to RD patients residing in Tuscany (Italy) in the years 20…

  • Healthcare Burden of Rare Diseases

Open Access•Silvia Baldacci, Michele Santoro et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Patients with rare diseases (RDs) need tailored, continuous, and multidisciplinary hospital care. This retrospective cohort study aimed to analyse the healthcare burden of RD patients using a multi-database approach, by linking the data of the Rare Diseases Registry of Tuscany with the regional hospital discharge database. The study population included 21,354 patients diagnosed with a RD between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2017. The healthcare…

  • Recommendations for Improving the Quality of Rare Disease Registries

Open Access•Yllka Kodra, Jérôme Weinbach et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Rare diseases (RD) patient registries are powerful instruments that help develop clinical research, facilitate the planning of appropriate clinical trials, improve patient care, and support healthcare management. They constitute a key information system that supports the activities of European Reference Networks (ERNs) on rare diseases. A rapid proliferation of RD registries has occurred during the last years and there is a need to develop guidan…

  • Respiratory Symptoms in Relation to Living near a Crude Oil First Treatment Plant in Italy

Open Access•Elisa Bustaffa, Alessio Coi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Exposure to air pollution has been shown to increase the risk of developing chronic respiratory diseases. The largest crude oil first treatment plant in Italy emits harmful polluting substances. This cross-sectional study assesses the occurrence of respiratory symptoms in a sample of the adult population living near the plant. A proximal and a reference area were defined in order to recruit 200 subjects. Each subject performed a spirometry test a…

  • Congenital Anomalies in Contaminated Sites

Open Access•Michele Santoro, Fabrizio Minichilli et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

The health impact on populations residing in industrially contaminated sites (CSs) is recognized as a public health concern especially in relation to more vulnerable population subgroups. The aim of this study was to estimate the risk of congenital anomalies (CAs) in Italian CSs. Thirteen CSs covered by regional CA registries were investigated in an ecological study. The observed/expected ratios (O/E) with 90% confidence intervals (CI) for the to…
