  • Steady state assumptions in Dalys

    Adnan A Hyder, Richard H Morrow•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1999•Citada por: 1•Referências: 3

OBJECTIVE: The disability adjusted life year (DALY) and the healthy life year (HeaLY) are both composite indicators of disease burden in a population, which combine healthy life lost from mortality and morbidity. The two formulations deal with the onset and course of a disease differently. The purpose of this paper is to compare the DALY and HeaLY formulations as to differences in apparent impact when a disease is not in an epidemiological steady…

  • Measuring the burden of disease

Adnan A Hyder, Guida Rotllant et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1998•Citada por: 11•Referências: 8

OBJECTIVES: This paper presents the background and rationale for a composite indicator, healthy life-year (HeaLY), that incorporates mortality and morbidity into a single number. HeaLY is compared with the disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) indicator, to demonstrate the relative simplicity and ease of use of the former. METHODS: Data collected by the Ghana Health Assessment team from census records, death certificates, medical records, and spec…

  • Costs and financing of improvements in the quality of maternal health services through the Bamako Initiative in Nigeria

Open Access•IBUKUN OGUNBEKUN, Olusoji Adeyi et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•1996•Citada por: 3

This paper reports on a study to assess the quality of maternal health care in public health facilities in Nigeria and to identify the resource implications of making the necessary quality improvements. Drawing upon unifying themes from quality assurance, basic microeconomics and the Bamako Initiative, locally defined norms were used to estimate resource requirements for improving the quality of maternal health care. Wide gaps existed between wha…

  • Health policy approaches to measuring and valuing human life

    Richard H Morrow, J H Bryant•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1995•Citada por: 3•Referências: 12

To achieve more cost-effective and equitable use of health resources, improved methods for defining disease burdens and for guiding resource allocations are needed by health care decision makers. Three approaches are discussed that use indicators that combine losses due to disability with losses due to premature mortality as a measure of disease burden. These indicators can also serve as outcome measures for health status in economic analyses. Ho…

  • Community-based intervention trials

Open Access•Burton Kirkwood, Betty R Kirkwood et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1989

The randomized controlled trial has become the standard basis for the evaluation of new therapeutic agents and procedures (and for measuring the protective efficacy of new vaccines or for assessing the value of screening procedures). Patients, who have met the criteria for eligibility and have agreed to participate in the trial, are allocated on a random basis to the alternative therapies under consideration. In order to avoid possible bias in th…

  • The application of a quantitative approach to the assessment of the relative importance of vector and soil transmitted diseases in Ghana

    Open Access•Richard H Morrow•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•1984•Citada por: 3•Referências: 2

  • Statistical analysis of patient-control studies in epidemiology. Factor under investigation an all-or-none variable

    Malcolm C Pike, Richard H Morrow•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1970•Referências: 3

THERE is considerable confusion in the medical literature as to the correct statistical method to apply to results obtained in retrospective studies in which patients with a particular disease are individually matched to control subjects

  • Burkitt's lymphoma and sickle cell trait

    Malcolm C Pike, Richard H Morrow et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1970•Referências: 2

ONLY two areas of the world, tropical Africa and New Guinea, are endemic for Burkitt's lymphoma. These are the principal areas of the world where malaria still occurs in hyperand holo-endemic forms, and within these two areas the geographical distribution of the tumour coincides closely with that of endemic malaria
