  • An Analysis of Terrain Classification for Long-Range Prediction of Conditions in Deserts

    Colin W Mitchell, R Webster et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1979•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

devised for classifying terrain, with the facet as the basic unit for practical land management, and coarser groupings to convey more general information for larger areas and to allow predictions about facets to be made over long distances. The hot desert terrain ofthe world was classified using it. This study examines the extent to which this classification achieved its purpose. • Dayas of the Moroccan Sahara and Other Arid Regions

    Colin W Mitchell, G Willimott et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1974•Referências: 1

Five types of calcareous hollow occurring in arid areas are defined. One of these, the daya, was studied in detail and the findings recorded. A world geographical distribution of different dayas is given with quantitative data on surface features and type. Six dayas occurring in the Moroccan Sahara were investigated and field data are given on topography, soils, drainage and vegetation. Physical and chemical analyses of soil samples from dayas an…

  • Terrain Evaluation by Means of a Data Bank

    P H T Beckett, R Webster et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1972•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

A DATA BANK IS DESCRIBED, TO EQUIP ENGINEERS AND LAND PLANNERS TO APPRAISE TERRAIN CONDITIONS OVER WIDE AREAS FROM WHICH EXISTING INFORMATION IS SPARSE. THE MATCHING OF DATA TO SITE REQUIRES AN INDEX OF TERRAIN DESCRIPTORS, OR A TERRAIN CLASSIFICATION. THIS PAPER PRESENTS THE TERRAIN CLASSIFICATIONS PROPOSED AS INDEXES TO REGIONAL DATA BANKS AND THE PRELIMINARY RESULTS FROM PRACTICAL TRIALS OF THEIR EFFICACY IN THE OXFORD AREA AND IN SOME HOT DES…

    Colin W Mitchell, P E Naylor et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1960•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

IN A former paper7 on the Lower Diyala region, reference was made to the Iraq Development Board's schemes fo the development of the hole Diyala basin. These schemes aim to improve the standard of living of the local inhabitants by expanding and intensifying agriculture with irrigation water from the new DerbendiKhan dam. Two other sub-regions are affected: the Upper Diyala and Middle Diyala. After brief mention of the former, this paper considers…
