Emergency Department Visits for Heat-Related Emergency Conditions in the United States from 2008–2020
Exposure to high temperatures is detrimental to human health. As climate change is expected to increase the frequency of extreme heat events, and raise ambient temperatures, an investigation into the trend of heat-related emergency department (ED) visits over the past decade is necessary to assess the human health impact of this growing public health crisis. ED visits were examined using the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample. Visits were inc…
A Dialogic Teaching Companion
Building on Robin Alexander’s landmark Towards Dialogic Teaching, this book shows how and why the dialogic approach has a positive impact on student engagement and learning. It sets out the evidence, examines the underpinning ideas and issues, and offers guidance and resources for the planning, implementation and review of effective dialogic teaching in a wide range of educational settings. Dialogic teaching harnesses the power of talk to engage …
Developing dialogic teaching
This paper considers the development and randomised control trial (RCT) of a dialogic teaching intervention designed to maximise the power of classroom talk to enhance students’ engagement and learning. Building on the author’s earlier work, the intervention’s pedagogical strand instantiates dialogic teaching not as a single, circumscribed ‘method’ but as an interlocking set of permissive repertoires through which, steered by principles of proced…

World class schools’ – noble aspiration or globalised hokum
This article is an edited version of the author’s BAICE Presidential Address, which was delivered in September 2009 at the 10th UKFIET International Conference on Education and Development. The editing removes the original’s visual elements but retains its tone, more or less. The paper anatomises ‘world class’, a concept, slogan, aspiration or claim which is now in routine use in the educational discourse of anglophone countries. Fuelled by inter…
Speaking but not listening? Accountable talk in an unaccountable context
Taking the 2009 UKLA conference theme of "making connections and building literate communities" and recalling Hoggart's plea for literacy to be critically and morally engaged rather than merely functional, this paper calls for a reassessment of the pursuit of literacy in schools so as to connect the language of learning with the language of democratic participation. Given what we know about the way classroom talk mediates both learning and cultur…

Still no pedagogy? principle, pragmatism and compliance in primary education
This article revisits Brian Simon's 1981 Simon B (1981) Why no pedagogy in England? in: B. Simon & W. Taylor (Eds) Education in the eighties: the central issues (London, Batsford) 124 145 [Google Scholar] judgement that for deep‐seated historical reasons English education lacks a coherent and principled pedagogy. Given that since 1997 the tide of educational centralisation has added teaching methods to those aspects of schooling which the UK gove…
Border Crossings
This article uses the Comparative Education millennium special issue and the author's recently published five-nation comparative study of primary education to argue the case for a new comparative pedagogy. Pedagogy is defined as both the act of teaching and the discourse in which it is embedded. The comparative analysis of pedagogy requires that we have a viable framework for the empirical study of classroom transactions and that we locate these …
Discourse, pedagogy and the National Curriculum
One of a number of studies of the impact of the National Curriculum on professional and educational practice, the CICADA project, funded by ESRC, focused on pupil‐teacher discourse in primary classrooms, setting it in the wider contexts of (i) a national survey of teachers and (ii) classroom data from before the legislation which heralded the reforms in question. While the survey data confirmed the findings of other studies‐‐namely, a scenario of…
