  • Speaking truth to power

    J Arthur Woodward, Jamie Woodward•CHAPTER•Making Geography Matter•2025

Collaborative microplastics research in the rivers of Manchester set out to establish the extent of the microplastic contamination problem and to better understand the main processes involved in their entry, storage, and transport. It was also driven by a concern to assess the ecological threat posed by these particles. Mapping the geography of microplastic contamination on river beds at the catchment scale is key to understanding the ecological …

  • Maintaining the Ramesside Empire

    Open Access•N R Spencer, Michaela Binder et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2024•Referências: 22

Pharaonic Egypt ruled Upper Nubia (now northern Sudan) from around 1450 to 1070 BCE : previous research has demonstrated how co-opted local elites and descendants of earlier immigrants held senior administrative positions following the initial conquest. Strontium isotope data from 39 individuals buried at the colonial centre of Amara West, combined with archaeological and epigraphic evidence, enable us to demonstrate that elites continued to arri…

  • Three thousand years of river channel engineering in the Nile Valley

    Open Access•M Dalton, N R Spencer et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2023•Citada por: 5•Referências: 7

Across a 1000‐km stretch of the River Nile, from the 1st Cataract in southern Egypt to the 4th Cataract in Sudan, many hundreds of drystone walls are located within active channels, on seasonally inundated floodplains or in now‐dry Holocene palaeochannel belts. These walls (or river groynes) functioned as flood and flow control structures and are of a type now commonly in use worldwide. In the Nile Valley, the structures have been subject only to…

  • The Arctic

    Klaus Dodds, Jamie Woodward•BOOK•Arctic•2021

The Arctic: A Very Short Introduction provides an account of the Arctic, its physical environment, and its people. The Arctic is demanding global attention as it warms, melts, and thaws in a manner that threatens not just its 4 million inhabitants, but the whole planet. The reduction of the Arctic to its changing environment would ignore the complexities of the region and its potential. This VSI explores key issues facing the region today, from g…

  • The Campanian Ignimbrite (Y5) tephra at Crvena Stijena Rockshelter, Montenegro

    Open Access•Mike W Morley, Jamie Woodward et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

Clearly defined distal tephras are rare in rockshelter sediment records. Crvena Stijena, a Palaeolithic site in Montenegro, contains one of the longest (> 20 m) rockshelter sediment records in Europe with deposits ranging in age from Middle Pleistocene to mid-Holocene. A distinctive tephra is clearly exposed within the well stratified record approximately 6.5 m below the present land surface. We present geochemical data to confirm that this tephr…

Strontium isotopic and petrologic information, obtained from sediment cores collected in the Nile delta of Egypt, indicate that paleoclimatic and Nile baseflow conditions changed considerably from about 4200 to 4000 cal yr B.P. in the Nile basin. Our study records a higher proportion of White Nile sediment transported during the annual floods at ca. 6100 cal yr B.P. than towards 4200 cal yr B.P., at which time suspended sediment from the Blue Nil…

  • Depositional history of Franchthi Cave

  • Quantitative sourcing of slackwater deposits at Boila rockshelter

    Open Access•Jamie Woodward, J C Woodward et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2001•Citada por: 5•Referências: 9

Evidence for large floods in the Pindus Mountains of Northwest Greece during the Lateglacial period is provided by a sequence of fine‐grained slackwater sediments preserved beneath the Late Upper Paleolithic deposits at Boila rockshelter in the Voidomatis River basin. We have applied a quantitative sediment fingerprinting approach to estimate the relative contributions from different catchment sediment sources to these flood sediments. Our approa…

  • The sedimentary records in Mediterranean rockshelters and caves

    Open Access•Jamie Woodward, Jamie C Woodward et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2001•Referências: 14

It is important to develop rigorous methods and robust conceptual models for the interpretation of rockshelter and cave sediment records so that the cultural sequences they contain can be considered in their proper environmental context. Much of what we know about the prehistory of the Mediterranean region and adjacent areas has largely been pieced together from materials excavated from sedimentary sequences in these environments. The rockshelter…

  • Late Quaternary Fluvial Sedimentation in the Voidomatis Basin, Epirus, Northwest Greece

    Open Access•John Lewin, Mark G Macklin et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1991

Detailed morpho- and lithostratigraphic investigations, allied with radiometric dating, in the Voidomatis basin, Epirus, northwest Greece, have identified four Quaternary terraced alluvial fills that range from middle Pleistocene to historic in age. Major-periods of alluviation during the late Quaternary were associated with valley glaciation (ca. 26,000–20,000 yr B.P.) and subsequent deglaciation (ca. 20,000–15,000 yr B.P.) in the Pindus Mountai…
