Ten-year longitudinal study of incarceration among a community-based cohort of people who inject drugs
People who inject drugs are over-represented among incarcerated populations. However, there are few studies elucidating patterns of incarceration among people who inject drugs, especially among community-based cohorts. Furthermore, data on drug use and injecting risk behaviours in carceral settings are limited globally. We aimed to describe lifetime patterns of incarceration, as well as drug use and injecting risk behaviours while incarcerated, a…

Factors Associated With Adult Incarceration Among People With Opioid Use Disorder in New South Wales, Australia
Modelling the impact of cuts in US Pepfar funding for opioid agonist therapy and needle and syringe programmes on drug-related deaths and HIV and hepatitis C transmission among people who inject drugs
BACKGROUND: The US government paused funding for the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in 2025, including disruptions in funding for opioid agonist therapy (OAT) and needle and syringe programmes (NSP). We evaluated the impact of these disruptions on HIV/HCV transmission and drug-related deaths (DRDs) among people who inject drugs (PWID) for 9 countries where PEPFAR funds OAT. METHODS: We developed a static model of HIV/HCV t…

Gender differences in hepatitis C virus incidence in and out of opioid agonist treatment among people who inject drugs in Montréal, Canada, March 2011–March 2024
We found similar HCV incidence among women and men who inject drugs in Montréal; however, among OAT-eligible men, OAT engagement was strongly associated with a lower risk of HCV acquisition. These findings highlight that gender disparities in HCV, as observed in some settings, are not consistent. Further research is needed to determine factors underlying gender differences
Initiation, cessation and resumption of attendance at the Melbourne supervised injecting room among a cohort of people who inject drugs
We found high MSIR service uptake, relative to cessation. Attendance was higher among men, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, and those recently homeless, with frequent attenders injecting more often and those on OAT less likely to attend frequently

Characterising benzodiazepine use and the association with non-fatal overdose among people who inject opioids in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
Benzodiazepine use is common among PWIO in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and is associated with higher prevalence of non-fatal overdose. These findings underscore the need to strengthen overdose prevention and harm reduction efforts addressing benzodiazepine use across the UK
Has the HCV cascade of care changed among people who inject drugs in England since the introduction of direct-acting antivirals
COC stages from seeing a specialist onwards improved after DAAs became widely available. Further improvements in HCV testing are needed to eliminate HCV in England
Differential risk for Hepatitis C and HIV among people who inject drugs in Kenya
Identifying barriers and facilitators to accessing harm reduction services in prisons
Several multi-level barriers and facilitators to accessing prison-based HRS exist. To improve HRS uptake, implementing holistic education for PIP and carceral employees, enhancing awareness of HRS through peer-led initiatives, and ensuring buy-in and support from prison leadership will be important. Furthermore, allocation of specific resources and enhanced policies that promote HRS will be beneficial
Impact and cost-effectiveness of interventions to eliminate hepatitis C virus among people who inject drugs in Haiphong, Vietnam
Using RDS surveys and other care settings to scale-up HCV-testing and treatment are cost-effective strategies to reduce HCV incidence among PWID in Vietnam
Modeling the impact of changing drug markets and structural determinants on HCV and/or HIV transmission among people who inject drugs in the United States
Trends and factors associated with illicit drug use in South Africa
Illicit drug use has increased substantially in South Africa and is associated with numerous socio-demographic characteristics, higher sexual risk behaviours and other well-being variables
Modeling the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on achieving HCV elimination amongst young and unstably housed people who inject drugs in San Francisco
The COVID-19 pandemic impeded progress toward achieving HCV elimination. Our findings indicate that existing partial rebounds in HCV testing and treatment may achieve the elimination goal by 2030, with an additional scale-up of interventions aimed at YPWID or unstably housed PWID ensuring San Francisco is likely to achieve elimination by 2030
Associations Between Sexual Behavior Stigma and HIV Risk Behaviors, Testing, Treatment, and Infection Among Men Who have Sex with Men in Ukraine
Stigma toward same-sex behaviors may be a structural driver of HIV epidemics among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Eastern Europe and has been linked to adverse HIV-outcomes elsewhere. We explored associations between sexual behavior stigma with HIV risk behaviors, testing, treatment, and infection. From November 2017 to February 2018, MSM across 27 Ukrainian cities were recruited to cross-sectional surveys using respondent driven sampling. El…
Predictors of hepatitis C cure among people who inject drugs treated with directly observed therapy supported by peer case managers in Kenya
Interventions to prevent HIV and Hepatitis C among people who inject drugs
An intensive model of care for hepatitis C virus screening and treatment with direct‐acting antivirals in people who inject drugs in Nairobi, Kenya
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment is essential for eliminating HCV in people who inject drugs (PWID), but has limited coverage in resource-limited settings. We measured the cost-effectiveness of a pilot HCV screening and treatment intervention using directly observed therapy among PWID attending harm reduction services in Nairobi, Kenya. DESIGN: We utilized an existing model of HIV and HCV transmission among current and forme…
Overlapping Key Populations and HIV Transmission in Tijuana, Mexico
Tijuana, Mexico, has a concentrated HIV epidemic among overlapping key populations (KPs) including people who inject drugs (PWID), female sex workers (FSW), their male clients, and men who have sex with men (MSM). We developed a dynamic HIV transmission model among these KPs to determine the extent to which their unmet prevention and treatment needs is driving HIV transmission. Over 2020-2029 we estimated the proportion of new infections acquired…
Diversity of incarceration patterns among people who inject drugs and the association with incident hepatitis C virus infection
Modeling the role of incarceration in HCV transmission and prevention amongst people who inject drugs in rural Kentucky
Incarceration is likely to be an important contributor to HCV transmission amongst PWID in PC. Prison-based OST could be an important intervention for reducing this risk

Incarceration history and risk of HIV and hepatitis C virus acquisition among people who inject drugs

Global patterns of opioid use and dependence
We summarise the evidence for medicinal uses of opioids, harms related to the extramedical use of, and dependence on, these drugs, and a wide range of interventions used to address these harms. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study estimated that in 2017, 40·5 million people were dependent on opioids (95% uncertainty interval 34·3-47·9 million) and 109 500 people (105 800-113 600) died from opioid overdose. Opioid agonis…
