Artisanal and small-scale gold mining effects in social-ecological systems
Predominant ASGM research focus on environmental state and impacts. • Ecological and social systems are studied in isolation. • Little emphasis on the spatial extent of ASGM mediated pollution. • Need for future ASGM research to determine mechanistic interactions between DPSIR elements and how they shape social-ecological systems. Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) has long been a lucrative source of income globally. Today, ASGM is conc…
Urban soil management of marginalized lands
Urban agriculture (UA) forms a crucial part of the urban food chain in many cities in sub-Sahara Africa (SSA). As urbanization continues, it becomes increasingly important to acknowledge the role of UA within the socioeconomic fabric of the city, and build inclusive business models to empower its practitioners. A crucial constraint for this is that various stakeholders in UA often take conflicting stances on the phenomenon. Some see it as an ille…
The significance of soils and soil science towards realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
In this forum paper we discuss how soil scientists can help to reach the recently adopted UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the most effective manner. Soil science, as a land-related discipline, has important links to several of the SDGs, which are demonstrated through the functions of soils and the ecosystem services that are linked to those functions (see graphical abstract in the Supplement). We explore and discuss how soil scientists…
Centennial-scale lake-level lowstand at Lake Uddelermeer (The Netherlands) indicates changes in moisture source region prior to the 2.8-kyr event
The Uddelermeer is a unique lake for The Netherlands, containing a sediment record that continuously registered environmental and climatic change from the late Pleistocene on to the present. A 15.6-m-long sediment record was retrieved from the deepest part of the sedimentary basin and an age–depth model was developed using radiocarbon dating, 210 Pb dating, and Bayesian modeling. Lake-level change was reconstructed using a novel combination of hi…
The added value of biomarker analysis in palaeopedology; reconstruction of the vegetation during stable periods in a polycyclic driftsand sequence in SE-Netherlands
Consistency of plant-specific n- alkane patterns in plaggen ecosystems
Plaggen soils, formed by various vegetational inputs during century-long plaggen (i.e. sod) application, comprise remarkably stable organic matter. Source identification could contribute to a better understanding of carbon stabilization mechanisms in soils and reconstruction of Holocene vegetation and land-use history. Cuticular-derived n-alkane distribution patterns as present in current vegetation are recognized as valuable tools to discriminat…
Radiocarbon Dating of Soil Organic Matter Fractions in Andosols in Northern Ecuador
Volcanic ash soils (Andosols) may offer great opportunities for paleoecological studies, as suggested by their characteristic accumulation of organic matter (OM). However, understanding of the chronostratigraphy of soil organic matter (SOM) is required. Therefore, radiocarbon dating of SOM is necessary, but unfortunately not straightforward. Dating of fractions of SOM obtained by alkali-acid extraction is promising, but which fraction (humic acid…
