Developing good person and citizen through civic and ethical education in Ethiopia
There is broad consensus that citizenship or civic education plays an important role in preparing democratic, tolerant and socially active citizens, although the role of civic education in achieving this goal in divided societies is far from straightforward. There is also the interdependent goal of developing a good person and a good citizen. In order for this to be successful, the content and pedagogy integrated into the formal curriculum (core …
Images of Africa as represented in Ethiopian secondary school geography textbooks
This article examines how secondary school (grades 9 to 12) geography textbooks of Ethiopia represented images of Africa. The study employed a qualitative content analysis method. All pages of the textbooks were used as units of analysis. The findings revealed that the textbooks represented utopian and dystopian images of Africa. On the one hand, the textbooks portrayed Africa as a naturally good place endowed with various natural resources. On t…
Education policy intentions and principals’ and teachers’ conceptualizations of curriculum differentiation in Ethiopian secondary education
This study examined the intentions of education policy documents and the conceptualizations of secondary school principals and teachers regarding curriculum differentiation. Getting Ahead of the Game
Groundwater management is highly complex, with many users sharing the same resource often with limited understanding of their interconnectedness. Behavioral experiments (games) that simulate real-life common-pool resource use have shown promise as an experiential learning tool for improving resource governance. This study pilots an experiential learning intervention in Ethiopia using a groundwater game to help raise awareness of groundwater over-…
Enhancing agency and empowerment in agricultural development projects
Development interventions increasingly include women's empowerment and gender equality among their objectives, but evaluating their impact has been stymied by the lack of measures that are comparable across interventions. This paper synthesizes the findings of 11 mixed-methods impact evaluations of agricultural development projects from South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa that were part of the Gender, Agriculture, and Assets Project, Phase 2 (GAAP2…

This article investigates the role of Ethiopian secondary school (grade 9 to 12) biology textbooks in promoting students' global understanding. This study grounded on Ethiopia's education policy aims and general education's curriculum framework objectives to prepare globally informed citizens. The study used mainly quantitative content analysis techniques. All pages in the textbooks were used as units of analysis. The findings of the study indica…
Does small-scale irrigation provide a pathway to women's empowerment? Lessons from Northern Ghana
Given persistent gender inequalities that influence how the benefits of technologies are distributed, the expansion of small-scale irrigation technologies requires the consideration of important gender dynamics and impacts. Women's lack of agency and access to resources relative to men, and other social constraints, often limit their ability to adopt and benefit from agricultural technologies. At the same time, expanding access to agricultural te…
Irrigation improves weight‐for‐height z ‐scores of children under five, and Women's and Household Dietary Diversity Scores in Ethiopia and Tanzania
Evidence on the potential for agricultural intensification to improve nutrition has grown considerably. While small-scale irrigation is a key factor driving agricultural intensification in sub-Saharan Africa, its impact on nutrition has not yet been thoroughly explored. In this study, we assess the impact of adoption of small-scale irrigation in Ethiopia and Tanzania on household and women's dietary diversity, as well as children's nutrition. We …
Demand and supply constraints of credit in smallholder farming
Credit constraint is often considered as one of the key barriers to the adoption of modern agricultural technologies and low agricultural productivity in low- and middle-income countries. Past research and much of the policy discourse associate agricultural credit constraints with supply-side factors, such as limited access to credit sources or high costs of borrowing. However, demand-side factors, such as risk-aversion and financial illiteracy a…
Adoption of multiple sustainable land management practices among irrigator rural farm households of Ethiopia
Using a household and plot‐level survey conducted in Ethiopia, this study analyses the difference in farmers' adoption of sustainable land management (SLM) practices between their rainfed and irrigated plots. The paper also investigates the varying influence of different types of irrigation water management systems and associated irrigation technologies on the adoption of SLM practices in irrigated plots. After controlling for heterogeneity among…
Seasonal variation in maternal dietary diversity is reduced by small‐scale irrigation practices
Some agricultural practices, such as irrigation, have the potential to buffer seasonal dietary gaps and through increased production and consumption improve diets, particularly of the rural poor relying on subsistence farming but also for rural and urban households purchasing irrigated produce on local markets. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of seasonality and irrigation on women's diet in rural Ethiopia. Using a longitudinal study design…
Changing patterns in genebank acquisitions of crop genetic materials
During the past two decades, a series of global policy changes affecting genetic resource conservation, use, and exchange have entered into force: the 2004 International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA), and more recently, the 2014 Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing (NP), a follow-on to the 1993 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). This paper characterizes the changing policy landscape governing…
