  • Landscape and Soil Erosion Changes Along Different Types of Road Over the Past 30 Years in the Largest Loess Tableland of China

    Open Access•Siqi Yang, S T Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2024

Road construction, as a product of modern civilization, can alter landscape patterns and accelerate erosion, especially in the loess tableland area of China with fragile eco‐environment. Different types of road could change land surface and increased soil erosion in different ways, while knowledge about this topic is limited. In this study, our objective is to evaluate the landscape and soil erosion changes along different types of road in the la…

  • Sharp decline of dust events induces regional wetting over arid and semi-arid Northwest China in the NCAR Community atmosphere model

Open Access•Xiaoning Xie, Xiaodong Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Multiple lines of observational evidence have indicated a significant wetting over the arid and semi-arid Northwest China (NWC) during recent decades, coinciding with a simultaneous sharp decline of dust events. Although recent studies have attributed NWC wetting to different anthropogenic and natural forcings, the mechanisms are not definitive and the regional wetting has been greatly underestimated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project h…

    Open Access•Hong Ao, Mark J Dekkers et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

Pre-Quaternary terrestrial climate variability is less well understood than that during the Quaternary. The continuous eolian Red Clay sequence underlying the well-known Quaternary loess-paleosol sequence on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) provides an opportunity to study pre-Quaternary terrestrial climate variability in East Asia. Here, we present new mineral magnetic records for a recently found Red Clay succession from Shilou area on the easte…

  • Magnetic parameter variations in the Chaona loess/paleosol sequences in the central Chinese Loess Plateau, and their significance for the middle Pleistocene climate transition

Open Access•Yougui Song, Xiaomin Fang et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

A high-resolution rock magnetic investigation was performed on the Chaona Quaternary loess/paleosol sequences in the Central Chinese Loess Plateau. Based on a newly developed independent unturned time scale and magnetic records, we reconstructed the history of the East Asia monsoons during the last 3 Ma and explored the middle Pleistocene climate transition (MPT). Rock magnetic results show that the loess layers are characterized by relatively hi…

  • Trace-element variations in an annually layered stalagmite as recorders of climatic changes and anthropogenic pollution in Central China

    Open Access•Liangcheng Tan, Chuan‐chou Shen et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

We analyzed variations in the Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca, REE/Ca (REE: rare earth element), Zn/Ca, and Pb/Ca ratios preserved in an annually layered stalagmite, XL21, from central China. The stalagmite record spans the 95 year period AD 1914–2008. The Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios have a significant positive correlation with the stalagmite's growth rate, suggesting that they were primarily controlled by growth-rate variations. Variations in REE/Ca ratios are consiste…

  • Quaternary structural partitioning within the rigid Tarim plate inferred from magnetostratigraphy and sedimentation rate in the eastern Tarim Basin in China

Open Access•Hong Chang, Zhaolong An et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

It has been proposed that within the Tarim Basin tectonic activity has been limited since Triassic time. However, on the basis of magnetostratigraphy from the eastern Tarim Basin, which defines the chronology of sedimentation and structural evolution of the basin, we show that the basin interior has been uplifted and partitioned during Quaternary. The magnetostratigraphy was constructed from 2228 samples that yielded acceptable inclination values…

Open Access•Zhaolong An, Zhisheng An et al.•ARTICLE•Scientific Reports•2012

Two atmospheric circulation systems, the mid-latitude Westerlies and the Asian summer monsoon (ASM), play key roles in northern-hemisphere climatic changes. However, the variability of the Westerlies in Asia and their relationship to the ASM remain unclear. Here, we present the longest and highest-resolution drill core from Lake Qinghai on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP), which uniquely records the variability of both the Westerlies and the…

The valley of the Baxie River, situated in the western region of the Loess Plateau in central China, contains a loess profile 15 m thick, which can be considered representative of loess-paleosol sequences formed over the last 17 ka. Both thermoluminescence (TL) determinations on fine-grained sediment (4–11 μm) and 14 C determinations on various organic fractions of paleosols from the profile have provided an extremely useful chronological framewo…

  • Stratigraphic Division of Holocene Loess in China

Open Access•Weijian Zhou, Zhisheng An et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1994•Citada por: 5•Referências: 8

Loess deposition within the Loess Plateau of China records the history of environmental change over the last 2.5 Myr. Loess-paleosol sequences of the last 10 ka, which have preserved information of global climate change, relate closely to human occupation of the area. Hence, studies of the deposition and development of Holocene loess are significant for studying environmental change and problems associated with engineering geology. We present her…

  • Reconstruction of 130-kyr Relative Geomagnetic Intensities from 10 Be in Two Chinese Loess Sections

Open Access•Weijian Zhou, Feng Xian et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•Citada por: 3•Referências: 33

Efforts to extract weak geomagnetic excursion signals from Chinese loess-paleosol 10 Be have generally been unsuccessful due to the complexities of its accumulation, because the geomagnetic and climate (precipitation and dust) signals contained in loess-paleosol sequence are tightly overprinted. Here, we present a reconstruction of geomagnetic relative paleointensities for the past 130 kyr from 10 Be records in 2 Chinese loess-paleosol sections u…

  • Magnetic susceptibility evidence of monsoon variation on the Loess Plateau of central China during the last 130,000 years

Open Access•Zhaolong An, Zhisheng An et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1991

The magnetic susceptibility of loess and paleosols in central China represents a proxy climate index closely related to past changes of precipitation and vegetation, and thus to summer monsoon intensity. Time series of magnetic susceptibility constructed for three loess-paleosol sequences in the southern part of the Chinese Loess Plateau document the history of summer monsoon variation during the last 130,000 yr. They correlate closely with the o…

  • Late Quaternary Records of the Atmospheric Input of Eolian Dust to the Center of the Chinese Loess Plateau

Open Access•Xiaoye Zhang, Zhaolong An et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

The concentrations of 15 elements and mineral grain-size distributions were determined for Late Quaternary loess sediments from the Chinese Loess Plateau. Particle-size distributions of the loess were approximately log-normal for each of three modes (i.e., 0.04 to 1 μm diameter, 2 to 20 μm, and 20 to 200 μm) that integrate the transport and deposition of eolian dust. The mass particle-size distributions of typical crustal elements (Si, Ca, Fe, Ti…

  • Grain Size of Quartz as an Indicator of Winter Monsoon Strength on the Loess Plateau of Central China during the Last 130,000 Yr

    Open Access•Jule Xiao, Stephen C Porter et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1995

The Chinese loess-paleosol sequence constitutes an important record of variations in Asian monsoon climate over the past 2.4 myr. Magnetic susceptibility of loess and paleosols has been used as a proxy for summer monsoon intensity, while median grain size has been regarded as a measure of the strength of winter monsoon winds that were responsible for most of the dust transport. However, median grain size is only an approximate index of winter mon…

  • Biogenic Silica Record in Lake Biwa of Central Japan over the Past 145,000 Years

Open Access•Jule Xiao, Yoshio Inouchi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1997

The record of the biogenic silica flux (BSF, g cm −2 (10 3 yr) −1 ) in Lake Biwa reflects changes in diatom productivity in the lake and provides information regarding changes in paleoclimatic conditions. The BSF record of Lake Biwa demonstrates five periods over the past ca. 145,000 yr when the BSF values were significantly greater than 7.5 g cm −2 (10 3 yr) −1 , and five intervals when they were lower. The data imply that paleoclimatic conditio…

  • Eolian Quartz Flux to Lake Biwa, Central Japan, over the Past 145,000 Years

Open Access•Jule Xiao, Yoshio Inouchi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1997

Eolian quartz flux (EQF, g cm −2 (10 3 yr) −1 ) to Lake Biwa, central Japan, provides direct information on variations of the East Asian winter monsoon. Lake Biwa sediments spanning the past ca. 145,000 yr are characterized by two main periods when EQF values were significantly greater than 5.50 g cm −2 (10 3 yr) −1 , and two main intervals during which EQF values were lower. Two periods with EQF values >5.50 g cm −2 (10 3 yr) −1 occurred from ca…

Open Access•Weijian Zhou, Zhisheng An et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Referências: 10

Through the establishment of radiocarbon chronozones relating common geological events within lacustrine and eolian sediments from five profiles representative of loess yuan (tablelands), river valley and northwest margin features of the Loess Plateau, we propose a series of stratigraphic divisions within the last 30 ka. The focus of this detailed study involves stratigraphic relationships contributing to evidence of Younger Dryas events, with th…

  • Variation of Rb/Sr Ratios in the Loess-Paleosol Sequences of Central China during the Last 130,000 Years and Their Implications for Monsoon Paleoclimatology

Open Access•Jun Chen, Zhaolong An et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1999

Rb, Sr, and magnetic susceptibility have been measured in the last interglacial–glacial loess profiles at Luochuan and Huanxian, central China. A high degree of similarity between the parameters in both profiles suggests that variations of Rb/Sr ratios in the sequence can be regarded as an indicator of East Asian summer monsoon strength. Matching the Rb/Sr record with the SPECMAP δ 18 O curve suggests that the Rb/Sr ratio responds sensitively to …

  • Use of Rubidium to Date Loess and Paleosols of the Louchan Sequence, Central China

Open Access•Jun Chen, Junfeng Ji et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2000

Rb concentrations, analyzed at 20-cm intervals from the Luochuan sequence of loess and paleosols, are sensitive to the loess–paleosol alternation controlled by monsoon climate. Because it is geochemically immobile, Rb can be well preserved in the loess–paleosol sequence after deposition, and its concentration depends mainly on properties of the winter monsoon-blown dust and on intensity of the summer monsoon-induced pedogenesis. A curvilinear rel…

  • Variability of East Asian Winter Monsoon in Quaternary Climatic Extremes in North China

    Open Access•Huayu Lu, J van Huissteden et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2000

In order to examine high-frequency variations of East Asian winter monsoon in Quaternary climatic extremes, two typical loess–paleosol sequences in the Chinese Loess Plateau were investigated. Sandy layers in the loess deposits, the “Upper sand” and “Lower sand” (layers L9 and L15, respectively), which represent a high-resolution record of paleomonsoon changes, have been sampled at intervals of 5–6 cm from sections at Luochuan and Xifeng. The gra…
