Why Did The Tartessians and Romans Build Where They Did on The South-Western Coast of The Iberian Peninsula?
This study examines the geomorphological factors that determined the location of a Tartessian necropolis and three Roman factories in south-western Spain. The necropolis was situated on a hill atop stable Neogene and Pleistocene strata, beyond the reach of tides and storms. The development and abandonment of the Roman factories is linked to the palaeogeographic evolution of two estuaries, the formation of coastal spits and marshes that influenced…
Beyond emotions
Understanding the drivers of COVID-19 vaccination intentions remains relevant as public health systems prepare for future pandemics. This study examined how emotional and social-cognitive factors influence COVID-19 vaccination intentions during two key phases of the COVID-19 pandemic: before (April-June 2020) and after (January-February 2021) vaccination rollout. A total of 586 adults completed an online survey assessing beliefs about COVID-19, s…
Advancing climate-smart forestry with an interactive decision-support tool that incorporates the preferences of private forest owners
We explored the potential of interactive multiobjective optimization for climatesmart forest management planning in privately owned forests. Through workshops with two groups of forest owners, we evaluated the influence of management preferences, information on climate-smart forestry practices, and monetary compensation on their decision-making process in a 20-year planning period. An interactive decision support tool enabled the analysis of trad…
Southern Iberian Rock Art
This article reviews key data in the context of the Strait of Gibraltar from the Iberian perspective: a region of significant importance that boasts the highest concentration of rock art sites containing prehistoric paintings and engravings spanning the full spectrum of human rock art, from its inception to the recent historic period. This area is of exceptional value for investigating the replacement of hunter–gatherer–fisher groups by tribal co…
Technosols Made from Iron Mine Tailings and Construction and Demolition Waste as an Alternative for Sustainable Solid Waste Management
Brazil faces urgent environmental challenges due to large waste production from mining and construction activities particularly regarding the disposal and management of the solid waste generated by these activities. The extraction of iron ore and the storage of tailings in dams, most of which are at imminent risk of rupture, represent foretold environmental disasters. Additionally, the disposal of construction waste raises environmental concerns …
A decision support approach for sustainability management using multiple criteria decision making and statistical techniques
In this paper, we derive a decision support tool to establish the policies a country may carry out to direct its performance toward the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. A panel data structure for a set of indicators belonging to the three sustainability dimensions (economic, social, and environmental) is used for the countries considered to calculate composite indicators for the three dimensions, and then formulate a multiobjecti…
Where the Shells Come From? A New Methodology for Establishing Collection Areas Applied to Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Shell Middens From Northern Iberia
Shellfishing was a common activity among prehistoric hunter-gatherers living in coastal areas in Iberia. Interpreting shellfish collection strategies is crucial to understand the lifeways of these coastal hunter-gatherers. Among collection strategies, the estimation of collection areas is essential for interpretation of mobility and subsistence strategies. In this paper we present a new methodological procedure to identify mollusc collection area…

Multi-criteria techniques based proposals for the End of Childhood Index
Child well-being is a subject of paramount importance, since a careful analysis of all the aspects related to childhood may have a major impact on the society as a whole. In this paper, based on the End of Childhood Index, which is a fully compensatory composite indicator published annually by the international organisation Save the children, we analyse the added information that can be provided through the use of multi-criteria analysis techniqu…
A Novel Methodology to Develop STEAM Projects According to National Curricula
The objective of this work is the elaboration of a methodology to develop STEAM projects (Science (S), Technology (T), Engineering (E), Art (A) and Mathematics (M)). The methodology proposed in this article is part of the results of the project ERASMUS+DART4City (2020-1-ES01-KA227-SCH-095545) “Empowering Arts and creativity for the cities of tomorrow”, whose objective is to design a methodology in order to develop STEAM projects from European cur…
Involving stakeholders in the evaluation of the sustainability of a tourist destination
Sustainability is a hot topic in our current society, and its effective measurement continues to be a challenge for researchers and practitioners. This issue is especially important, and at the same time delicate, in tourist destinations, where the interests of very diverse stakeholders intersect. In this paper, a novel combination of methodologies is proposed to treat this problem comprehensively. This methodology includes a) the identification …
Mollusc collection and Holocene palaeogeographical evolution in a southwestern iberian estuary
The malacological analysis of the Cañada Honda shell midden (Tinto-Odiel estuary, SW Spain) has allowed an approximation of the palaeo biodiversity of this sector during the Mesolithic. During this period, the progressive marine transgression caused the flooding of this estuary, coinciding with an initial intensive capture of the bivalves Lutraria and Ruditapes decussatus in the northern and southern sector of this site, respectively. In a second…
Combining reference point based composite indicators with data envelopment analysis
In our knowledge society, where universities are key players, the assessment of higher education institutions should meet the new demands of the present complex environment. This calls for the use of techniques that are able to manage this complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel combination of methodologies, jointly using a multi-criteria reference point scheme and the data envelopment analysis (DEA) for the assessment of universities. This…
Assessing Progress Towards SDGs Implementation Using Multiple Reference Point Based Multicriteria Methods
To achieve the UN 2030 Agenda Goals, and considering their complexity and multidisciplinary, Multi-criteria analysis appears to be a suitable approach to give a true support to public decision makers in defining policy lines. This study focuses on the application of the Multiple Reference Point Weak-Strong Composite Indicators (MRP-WSCI) and its partially compensatory version (MRP-PCI), to assess, in the framework of the UN 2030 Agenda, the susta…

Prehistoric Human Tracks in Ojo Guareña Cave System (Burgos, Spain)
In 1969, members of Grupo Espeleológico Edelweiss discovered the Sala and Galerías de las Huellas in Ojo Guareña Cave system (Burgos, Spain). These contained hundreds of ancient human footprints, preserved in the soft sediment on the floor. These footprints represent the tracks of a small group of people who walked barefoot through these complex passages in the cave. Owing to the difficult compatibility of the documentation and preservation of th…
Assessing environmental sustainability by the double reference point methodology
Sustainability is one of the main challenges of society. Progress in operational tools that help with environmental management and decision-making is slower and more complex than expected. The objective of the research is to show the usefulness of calculating composite indicators of environmental sustainability as a management tool. The proposed scientific model applies a multicriteria analysis, in an aggregate approach, with a double reference p…
