  • The ‘Toolmakers Son’

    Open Access•Bradley Ward, Christian Sherrington•ARTICLE•British Politics•2026•Referências: 20

This paper introduces the concept of techno neo-statism to define and interpret Keir Starmer’s statecraft during Labour’s first year in government. Techno neo-statism seeks to harness innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies to strategically revive and finetune state capacity so that it can drive public sector and economic productivity while protecting the ‘national interest’ from perceived threats and insecurities. • Whither the Centre? Tracing Centralisation and Fragmentation in UK Politics

    Open Access•Joseph Ward, Bradley Ward et al.•ARTICLE•Political Studies Review•2025•Citada por: 2•Referências: 67

This article explores the question of how to conceptualise the location, capacity and effectiveness of the ‘centre’ in the UK policymaking process. While the literature on UK governance has historically featured avid disagreements about the power and capacity of central government, we identify a more recent convergence around the idea that the UK government is characterised by persistent centralisation of decision making alongside a fragmentation…

  • People, class, democracy

Open Access•Bradley Ward, Marco Guglielmo•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ideologies•2024•Citada por: 3

This article builds on the insights of Antonio Gramsci and Stuart Hall to introduce the ‘critical-relational’ approach to the analysis of left-wing ideologies that have been defined as populist. In doing so, we identify four distinctive ideologies: ‘populist social democracy’, ‘populist socialism’, ‘popular social democracy’ and ‘popular socialism’. Two key contributions are made. First, the ‘relational’ aspect of this conceptualization establish…

  • From Brexit to Covid-19

    Open Access•Joseph Ward, Bradley Ward•ARTICLE•Political Studies•2023•Citada por: 26•Referências: 23

Many commentators have suggested that the first 18 months of the Johnson government were characterised by a propensity to centralise power. However, few accounts have situated the administration in the historical context of the British state or systematically examined these centralising tendencies. This article attempts to address these omissions. First, through a critical assessment of the literature on authoritarian neoliberalism, the concept o…

  • Pop-socialism

    Open Access•Bradley Ward, Marco Guglielmo•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Politics…•2021•Citada por: 2•Referências: 20

This article draws from primary research – including 46 semi-structured interviews – to provide a comparative analysis of Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the British Labour Party between 2015 and 2020, and Nichi Vendola’s leadership of the Italian radical left between 2010 and 2015. It is claimed that both cases represent a new form of left politics – which we term pop-socialism – that combines popular-democratic appeals to the ‘people’ with the tr…
