  • Correcting Misperceptions Across Contexts

Open Access•Min Hee Go, Yesola Kweon et al.•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•2026

How do citizens respond to accurate information regarding social inequality? This study examines public perceptions of gender inequality in Japan and South Korea—two high-income democracies characterized by persistent gender gaps but contrasting political contexts. Using original survey data and preregistered survey experiments (N = 7,000), we test whether corrective information about gender disparities influences support for related government p…

  • The Political Roots of Gender Divergence

    Open Access•Min Hee Go•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Studies•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 34

Throughout the twentieth century, Taiwan and South Korea underwent rapid economic development and successfully democratized without reversal to authoritarianism. Despite their similar trajectories, the two countries diverge significantly in political and public support for gender equality. Taiwan is widely seen as the most gender-equal country in Asia, while South Korea remains deeply polarized, with uneven progress in women’s representation. Wha…

  • Holding mayors accountable? Policing and mayoral approval in American cities

    Min Hee Go•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2025•Referências: 33

Does police performance affect mayoral approval? Do citizens hold mayors accountable when they are dissatisfied with the police? Despite the established body of research on executive approval, little is known about how public opinion on a particular bureaucratic branch – police department in this case – affects mayoral approval ratings. On the one hand, the performance model of mayoral approval suggests that positive evaluation of police performa…

  • The tale of a two-tiered city

    Min Hee Go•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•2018•Referências: 9

In this article, I investigate the long-term consequences of community civic structure on postdisaster recovery. Tracing various signs of recovery after Hurricane Katrina, I find that community civic structure is associated with deepening, rather than reducing, spatial inequality in New Orleans and report 3 findings. First, community civic structure contributes far more to repopulating communities on higher ground than low-lying neighborhoods. Se…

  • Does Christopher Chen vote more than Shu-Wei Chen? The cost of ethnic retention among Asian American voters

    Min Hee Go•ARTICLE•Politics Groups and Identities•2016•Citada por: 2•Referências: 27

This paper explores the saliency of ethnic markers for those who are formally incorporated in the electoral process. In this paper, I examine whether voters with distinctively ethnic names show different participatory patterns than voters with Anglicized names. Drawing on a unique dataset of over 50,000 Asian American registered voters in New York City, I find that name Anglicization has a significant association with their political engagement. …

  • Building a Safe State

    Open Access•Min Hee Go•ARTICLE•The American Review of Public…•2014•Citada por: 3•Referências: 16

Although existing studies uncovered how controversial policies are adopted across American States, little is known as to how regulatory policies are diffused that are technically complex and yet have low political salience. Drawing on existing theories of policy adoption and diffusion, this article identifies the determinants of building code mandates in U.S. state governments. Using original data from state legislatures and administrative agenci…

  • The Power of Participation

    Open Access•Min Hee Go•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2014•Citada por: 8•Referências: 35

The uneven distribution of urban services has been the subject of debate in the urban studies literature, and yet no consensus has been reached upon its determinants. This article reexamines this puzzle by looking at variation in post-Hurricane Katrina building permit issuance in New Orleans. Focusing on the potential effect of civic competence on urban service delivery patterns, I test a hypothesis that the number of building permits and the spe…
