The Transition in Indian Iron Technology With the Use of High‐Carbon Crucible Steel in the Mid‐1st Millennium bc
Studies of the role played by crucible steel in the evolution of early iron technology in India lag far behind its long‐standing reputation as a key historical material with unique functional properties. A comparative metallographic study found evidence of a crucible steel‐driven technological transition reflected in the numerous awl‐shaped iron objects from two archaeological sites in Maharashtra, India. Those in the first group were recovered f…
The time scale of nomadic steelmaking from molten cast iron
A structure consisting of roughly spherical particles of pearlite approximately 50 μm in diameter has repeatedly been observed in iron fragments excavated from across the Mongolian steppe. This structure illustrates a treatment where molten cast iron was subjected to an isothermal solidification reaction driven by the lowering of its carbon level through rapid decarburization. A simplified diffusion‐controlled model predicts that the reaction wil…

Recycled metal fragments and small-scale bronze acquisition in northern hinterland communities of the Mongol Empire
The implication of the technology and chronology reflected in the metal assemblage from the middle‐class Xiongnu burials at Tamiryn Ulaan Khoshuu, Mongolia
Bronze and iron objects from the middle‐class Xiongnu burials at Tamiryn Ulaan Khoshuu were examined for technology and chronology. The bronze objects were made from copper–tin–lead alloys, mostly for ornamental purposes, while the iron objects were household items made of cast iron. Radiocarbon measurements dated the site to the 4th century bce to the 1st century ce . The results revealed two key factors: (1) Xiongnu style material culture estab…

Compositional modification of nonmetallic inclusions in bloomery iron during post‐smelting treatments and its implication
The chemical composition of nonmetallic inclusions in finished iron artifacts often holds key information on the smelting and post‐smelting processes applied during their production. This possibility was tested with special iron objects deemed product intermediaries from a royal tomb constructed at Gyongju, the former capital of the Silla state during the Korean Three Kingdoms period ( c . 300–668 ce ). Metallographic examination identified two d…
Metallographic and neutron diffraction analysis on microstructural evolution and control in ancient Indian high carbon steel
Despite the credit attributed to India for the early production of high carbon steel, not much is known about Indian contribution to the implementation of a pertinent fabrication technique without which this special material might have little practical value. A metallographic examination of a small iron lump and an iron sheet, both excavated from the second BC to second AD century site at Junnar in India, provided evidence that the production of …
