Stepped-Care Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety in Children in Primary Care
Women's experiences negotiating barriers and asserting agency on family planning in urban east-central Uganda
Many women in Uganda face barriers to using family planning in ways that are safe and responsive to their needs. This study explored the experiences of women in urban east-central Uganda to understand how they access, use, and navigate family planning services to identify opportunities for service improvement. Ten women participated in a three-month photovoice process combining photography with bi-monthly group discussions. Data were analysed usi…
Using causal loop diagrams to examine the interrelationships between factors influencing family planning utilisation in urban east central Uganda
INTRODUCTION: Despite progress in reducing Uganda's unmet need for family planning (FP), particularly in urban areas, it remains high with notable intraurban disparities. FP services in urban settings are delivered in a complex health system, which impacts service delivery and utilisation. Acknowledging the complexity of FP utilisation in these contexts, this study adopted a systems thinking approach, using causal loop diagrams (CLDs), to examine…
Urban Imaginations
Based on multi-method team ethnography, this study examines the knowledge production of creative ethnographic methods. We explore what the encounters between ethnographers and streets as sensory entities can tell us about urban living: How do ethnographers become part of street life, and what kind of knowledge is produced through this material-sensory entanglement? Our experimental methods include ethnographic hanging out, sensory intervention, a…
Psychosocial effects of adverse pregnancy outcomes and their influence on reporting pregnancy loss during surveys and surveillance
Psychosocial effects of APOs may influence respondents' interest and ability to effectively engage in an interview. Findings suggest that a multi-pronged approach, including interviewer training in identifying and dealing responsively with grieving respondents, and meeting needs for health information and professional counselling could improve reporting of APOs in surveys and surveillance settings. More so, participants need to understand the pur…
Secular trend, seasonality and effects of a community-based intervention on neonatal mortality
BACKGROUND: Little is know about whether the effects of community engagement interventions for child survival in low-income and middle-income settings are sustained. Seasonal variation and secular trend may blur the data. Neonatal mortality was reduced in a cluster-randomised trial in Vietnam where laywomen facilitated groups composed of local stakeholders employing a problem-solving approach for 3 years. In this analysis, we aim at disentangling…
Response process and test–retest reliability of the Context Assessment for Community Health tool in Vietnam
BACKGROUND: The recently developed Context Assessment for Community Health (COACH) tool aims to measure aspects of the local healthcare context perceived to influence knowledge translation in low- and middle-income countries. The tool measures eight dimensions (organizational resources, community engagement, monitoring services for action, sources of knowledge, commitment to work, work culture, leadership, and informal payment) through 49 items. …
Exploring the influence of context in a community-based facilitation intervention focusing on neonatal health and survival in Vietnam
This study provides insight for further understanding of the influence of contextual aspects to improve effects of a KT intervention in Vietnam. We suggest that future KT interventions should apply strategies to improve local authorities' engagement, to identify and communicate non-financial incentives, and to make disadvantaged groups a priority. Further studies to evaluate the contextual aspects in KT interventions in LMICs are also needed
Distance decay in delivery care utilisation associated with neonatal mortality. A case referent study in northern Vietnam
Distance to the closest health facility was negatively associated with neonatal mortality risk. Health care utilisation in the prenatal period could partly explain this risk elevation since there was a distance decay in health system usage prior to and at delivery. The geographical dimension must be taken into consideration when planning interventions for improved neonatal survival, especially when targeting socio-economically disadvantaged group…
Unreported births and deaths, a severe obstacle for improved neonatal survival in low-income countries; a population based study
BACKGROUND: In order to improve child survival there is a need to target neonatal mortality. In this pursuit, valid local and national statistics on child health are essential. We analyze to what extent births and neonatal deaths are unreported in a low-income country and discuss the consequences at local and international levels for efforts to save newborn lives. METHODS: Information on all births and neonatal deaths in Quang Ninh province in No…
