  • From Flocks to Fields: Pastoralism in Eastern al-Andalus During the 11th Century

Open Access•Pedro Jiménez, José Luis Simón García et al.•ARTICLE•Humans•2025•Referências: 14

The development of transhumant livestock farming in the Iberian Peninsula from the Late Middle Ages onward is one of the most thoroughly studied aspects of economic history, as it laid the foundation for the prosperity of the Kingdom of Castile throughout the Early Modern period. In contrast, there is very little information about livestock activity in the earlier period of al-Andalus, the part of the peninsula under Islamic rule from the eighth …

  • The rural mosque uncovered in the Andalusi village of La Graja (eleventh century ce )

Open Access•Pedro Jiménez, Pedro Jiménez-Castillo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Studies•2024

This article examines the rural mosque recently excavated in the archaeological site of La Graja (Higueruela, Albacete). This is a very important find from a historical point of view, since there is little archaeological evidence for this type of building despite the fact that many examples must have existed in al-Andalus. This congregational mosque served the inhabitants of an Andalusi village (Ar. qarya) and other small hamlets in its vicinity.…

  • The colonisation of rainfed land in al-Andalus: An unknown aspect of the eleventh-century economic expansion

Open Access•Pedro Jiménez, José Luis Simón García et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 3

Since the 1980s, there have been significant advancements in the study of the development of rural Andalusi settlement linked to irrigated agriculture, both in relation to large suburban green belts and to the small hydraulic systems of rural communities in mountainous regions. However, recent investigations in several dry areas and, in particular, the intensive archaeological survey that we have been carrying out in the eastern sector of La Manc…

  • Campesinado andalusí del secano manchego (s. XI).
