  • The Image of Saint Margaret and the Motif of the Woman and the Dragon

    Open Access•Sharon Khalifa-Gueta•ARTICLE•Mediaevistik•2022

This article investigates the function of Saint Margaret’s image and legenda in childbirth rituals during the late medieval and early modern periods. Illuminating the discrepancy between visual and textual descriptions of the saint’s encounter with a dragon, it contends that the saint’s image is based on the millennia-old motif of the woman and the dragon, and that this image was conceived of as similar to images of fertility demons. The portray…

  • Mother of Dragons

    Open Access•Sharon Khalifa-Gueta•ARTICLE•Eikon / Imago•2022•Referências: 13

Daenerys Targaryen’s metamorphosis scene is analyzed in this article, with accordance to the millennia old structure of the motif of “the woman and the dragon.” It is suggested in this article, that the visual manifestation of Daenerys in the HBO series Game of Thrones, is a reception of ancient Greco-Roma, and Early modern art. This article follows the iconography of four examples: the Minoan figurine of a priestess or goddess that holds serpent…

  • The Leontocephaline from the Villa Albani

    Open Access•Sharon Khalifa-Gueta•ARTICLE•Humans•2022•Referências: 13

In this article, I place the Leontocephaline from the Villa Albani on the axis of time of the Mithraic Saturn/Kronos prototype. Entangled in that prototype are astrology, concepts of death, and time perceptions. As a symbolic choice, its style reflects politico-religious and cultural colonial appropriation by Rome’s elite of the Severan period and demonstrates a syncretistic complexity adapted to Roman esthetic values. By surveying these issues a…

  • Medusa Must Die! The Virgin and the Defiled in Greco-Roman Medusa and Andromeda Myths

    Open Access•Sharon Khalifa-Gueta•ARTICLE•Athens Journal of Mediterranean…•2021•Referências: 13

Andromeda and Medusa are two types within the same motif—that of the motif of “the woman and the dragon”. This article positions a mythical hero between these two women and contrasts their relationship with dragons, along with a further fresh investigation of women and dragons in ritual and cultural context. The complexity of this motif, in contrast to the dragon-slayer topos, is explored, shedding light on social views, desires, and fears toward…
