Re-visiting the Schultz site in North Dakota
The Schultz site is on the Sheyenne River in southeastern North Dakota. Based on Hidatsa traditions and the pottery from the site, it is widely regarded as an early settlement of the Awaxawi. More recent work shows that the site has a more complex history, although the latest component at Schultz conforms to traditions about an early Hidatsa homeland
Caddo or Cahokian? Stylistic and compositional analyses of a fine-engraved vessel from northwest Iowa
A ceramic vessel found at a Mill Creek culture (eastern Initial Middle Missouri variant) site in northwest Iowa exhibits features characteristic of both the Southern Caddo Holly Fine Engraved type and the Fine Engraved Carving type of the American Bottom Fine Grog series. Knowing the vessel’s likely manufacturing locale is important in understanding relationships between Middle Missouri tradition people and distant groups to the south. To determi…

The Cheyenne migration and the Biesterfeldt site revisited
The Cheyenne migration to the Great Plains is re-examined in light of recent archaeological work at the Biesterfeldt site in southeastern North Dakota. Biesterfeldt is regarded as an intrusion from the west rather than as the product of a farming people moving from the southeast. Wood's previous analysis of Biesterfeldt is reaffirmed with the additional suggestion the Cheyenne people, regarded as the authors of the site, were by this time already…
The Measurement and Analysis of Depth in Archaeological Geophysics
Information on depth may be gained through the analysis of geophysical maps, by utilizing soundings, pseudosections, or time‐slices, or via the application of downhole measurements. Various methods and techniques were compared at the Biesterfeldt site, a proto‐historic earth‐lodge village in the Northern Plains, USA. Both traditional and more experimental approaches were used, including ground‐penetrating radar time slices and overlay analyses, a…
Investigations in the Cahokia Site Grand Plaza
Research designed to explore the Grand Plaza at the Cahokia Mounds site, the largest Mississippian-period mound center in the eastern United States, documents that plazas may yield significant information regarding Mississippian manipulation of the landscape and the initial growth of mound centers. Probing and excavation within the Grand Plaza revealed that buried ridge-swale topography, identified through an electromagnetic-conductivity survey, …
