  • Famine Vulnerability in the Contact-Era Basin of Mexico

    Open Access•Thomas M Whitmore, Barbara J Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•1998•Citada por: 2•Referências: 15

This study simulates vulnerability to famine and food poverty among peasant households in the Basin of Mexico two decades after the Conquest. Using demographic and cadastral data recorded in theCódice de Santa María Asunción(Tepetlaoztoc), vulnerability is assessed by comparing household and patio-group (household compound) food production to consumption needs at the same scales, Modeling of food production of the principal subsistence crops (mai…

  • Contact Period Rural Overpopulation in the Basin of Mexico

    Open Access•Barbara J Williams, Barbara Williams•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1989•Citada por: 9•Referências: 8

The carrying-capacity model applied to the Basin of Mexico by Sanders et al. is tested by Contact period hieroglyphic data on population and landholding from the rural tlaxilacalli (ward) of Santa María Asunción. Two calculations are made of the theoretically maximum tlaxilacalli population, one using the Sanders et al. parameters, and the second based on Asunción data. The analysis confirms the accuracy of Sanders et al.'s maize yields and avera…

  • Content, Provenience, and Significance of the Codex Vergara and the Códice de Santa María Asunción

    Open Access•Barbara J Williams, Barbara Williams et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1988•Citada por: 4•Referências: 6

The Codex Vergara and the Codice de Santa Maria Asuncion are the most comprehensive census-cadastral native pictorial manuscripts that have survived from Central Mexico. Research reported here establishes that the documents record the household composition and landholdings of 17 localities in an area presently corresponding to identifiable barrios in and around the village of Tepetlaoztoc, located northeast of Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico. Dra…

  • Middle American Folk Soil Taxonomy

Open Access•Barbara J Williams, Barbara Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1981•Citada por: 6

Middle American folk soil taxonomies exhibit structures similar to those of folk biological taxonomies, but nomenclature patterns are quite unlike those found in other domains. Although many of the properties that differentiate technical soil taxa are recognized also in folk taxonomies, there is a low level of correspondence between technical and folk taxa because of differences in perception of the classificatory unit. To Spanish‐speaking campes…

  • Tepetate in the Valley of Mexico∗

Barbara J Williams, Barbara Williams•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1972•Citada por: 10

One of the dominant surface materials in the Valley of Mexico is called tepetate, a term which sometimes is used simply as a synonym for caliche. The semantic confusion is traced to the Aztec taxonomic system of earth materials in which consistence rather than color is a primary attribute. Thus, a variety of earth materials may be termed tepetate. As a construction material, tepetate has played a major role in the development of modern Mexico. Te…
