  • Forensic Anthropology

Niels Lynnerup, C Clifford Boyd et al.•BOOK•Forensic Anthropology•2018

Forensic anthropology is the application of biological or physical anthropology in the service of justice. One main area is the analysis of human remains. Such analyses involve person identification by assessment of age and sex of the deceased, and comparison with ante-mortem data. Another major area is the analysis of surveillance pictures and videos. Such analyses may comprise facial and bodily morphological comparisons, multi-angle photogramme…

  • Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century salt production in Saltville, Virginia

    C Clifford Boyd, Robert C Whisonant•ARTICLE•Southeastern Archaeology•2018•Citada por: 1•Referências: 3

The geology of the Saltville Valley in southwest Virginia creates a brine with an exceptionally high concentration of sodium chloride (98.7%). Because of this resource, the town of Saltville, Virginia, became the major producer of salt for the Confederacy during the latter half of the Civil War. The wood-fired salt furnaces (as the production facilities were called) produced a maximum of four million bushels of salt from this naturally occurring …

  • Monacans as Moundbuilders

    Open Access•C Clifford Boyd•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2004•Referências: 4

Dunham et al. (2003) propose a connection between Late Woodland accretional burial mounds in central Virginia and the historic Monacan Indians. However, the authors' association of these mounds with the Monacans is not supported by available archaeological or ethnohistoric data

  • A Multidimensional Investigation of Biocultural Relationships among Three Late Prehistoric Societies in Tennessee

    Open Access•C Clifford Boyd, Donna C Boyd•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1991•Citada por: 1•Referências: 4

Interrelations among three roughly contemporaneous late prehistoric Mississippian societies in Middle and East Tennessee are reexamined in terms of currently available biological, archaeological, and ethnohistoric data. Previous researchers have suggested a close relation between two of those cultures-Mouse Creek and Middle Cumberland-to the exclusion of the third, Dallas. However, multivariate analyses of craniofacial and mandibular dimensions o…

  • In Search of Coosa

    Open Access•C Clifford Boyd, Gerald F Schroedl•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1987•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

The recently published reconstruction of Hernando de Soto's route through the southeastern United States, and of the chiefdom of Coosa (Hudson et al. 1985), is critiqued. The researchers' estimates of time traveled by the expedition, their use of certain vague or unreliable sources, and their interpretation of archaeological data are questioned. These problems weaken their claims that their reconstruction is better than the Soto route originally …
