The Chemical Composition of Jasper Artefacts from New England and the Middle Atlantic
Reply to Hughes
Hughes (1992) raises two points in his evaluation of our paper on Hopewell obsidian studies (Hatch et al. 1990): (a) Why did we not attempt to identify the several possible western United States sources from which our Hopewell specimens were derived, and (b) was it legitimate to report hydration-rim measurements with a.1 μm or less level of accuracy? These issues are addressed within the context of our initial research goals and through reference…
Hopewell Obsidian Studies
Specific questions regarding the antiquity of major midwestern Hopewell culture sites and their role in regional exchange systems are addressed in this paper through the dating (obsidian hydration) and compositional characterization (neutron activation analysis [NAA] and atomic absorption spectroscopy [AAS]) of obsidian artifacts. The analysis of 34 specimens from the Seip, Mound City, and Hopewell sites, Ohio, and the Naples site, Illinois, incr…
Procurement, Tool Production, and Sourcing Research at the Vera Cruz Jasper Quarry in Pennsylvania
Prehistoric jasper quarrying and tool production at the Vera Cruz site, located near Allentown, Pennsylvania, are investigated through studies of quarry design, lithic heat treatment, intrasite spacing of tool production, and through functional and temporal analyses of artifacts. A methodology combining neutron-activation analysis and discriminant analysis is outlined, and the chemical profiles of seven regional jasper quarries are offered as a f…

A Simulation Approach to the Measurement of Change in Ceramic Frequency Seriation
This paper examines the problems encountered by users of ceramic frequency seriation in distinguishing chronologically meaningful trends from the background stochastic “noise” inherent in all ceramic assemblages. Aspects of manufacture, breakage and discard behavior are found to be important in the creation of “noise” in the archaeological record. A computerized model (POTS), which simulates both chronological changes and background “noise” in th…
Aboriginal Thermal Alteration of a Central Pennsylvania Jasper
The aboriginal thermal processing of Bald Eagle Jasper in Central Pennsylvania is described in terms of the chemical and physical changes that occur in this material. Heat treatment is shown to transform the jasper's geothite component to hematite and to improve its workability by reducing its fracture toughness by one-half. This is accompanied by a yellow to red color change. The role of thermal alteration in the local lithic technology is infer…
The estimation of age at death and ages of formation of transverse lines from measurements of human long bones
A radiographic method is presented which estimates the age at death from the diaphyseal length of a child's long bone or bones. Mean lengths are calculated from adult males and females separately in the skeletal population under study, and the child's age derived from the proportion of adult length attained at his or her death. The calculations come from double logistic curves originally derived from a sample of Colorado children (McCammon, 1970)…
