Trans-Holocene coastal occupations at the Faro Punta Marquez site, Pacific Coast of Baja California Sur (BCS), Mexico
Excavations at the Faro Punta Marquez (FPM) site reveal occupations spanning the Holocene from ∼10,600 cal BP to a couple of hundred years ago. Shellfish remains indicate a reduction of estuary and mangrove habitats associated with climatic shifts and sea-level stabilization during the Early–Middle Holocene transition. Shellfish assemblages demonstrate flexible harvesting strategies as early occupations are marked by bivalves associated with mang…

Settlement Chronology and Subsistence Patterns in Cabo Pulmo, Baja California Sur, Mexico
Cabo Pulmo National Park (CPNP), within the East Cape of Baja California Sur, Mexico, is the location of a highly productive rocky reef ecosystem that was likely attractive to people throughout the Holocene. AMS radiocarbon dates from sites along the coast and faunal data from two excavated sites, D20 and D27, indicate people were present in the region by at least 7120–6755 cal b.p. (D34), but evidence of persistent occupation and possibly higher…
Paleoenvironmental reconstruction in La Paz Bay, Gulf of California
Oceanic characteristics of the Holocene are used to understand climatic patterns and phenomena that affect marine and human communities. Likewise, past marine conditions can be reconstructed from surface sea temperature (SST), using stable oxygen isotopes in bivalve shells. The objective of this study was to calculate Holocene summer SSTs for La Paz Bay, by analyzing δ 18 O of 14 C dated bivalve shells ( Chione californiensis) from a Holocene cam…
The Antiquity of Pearling in the Americas
AMS radiocarbon dating of two modified pearls from the Covacha Babisuri site, Espíritu Santo Island, Baja California Sur, México, corroborates associated midden dates suggesting that traditional indigenous use and modification of pearls as items of adornment began at least 8,500 years ago. To our knowledge, these are the oldest modified pearls found in dated archaeological contexts anywhere in the world. The presence of similarly modified pearls …
Early Holocene Use of Pleistocene Fossil Shells for Hide-Working at Covacha Babisuri on Espíritu Santo Island, Baja California Sur, Mexico
Microwear studies and experimentation were used to analyze fossil Glycymeris gigantea and Dosinia ponderosa shells from the early human occupation of the Covacha Babisuri rock shelter on Baja California's Espíritu Santo Island. The most abundant fossil Glycymeris gigantea shells appear to have been used by early coastal foragers between 11,000 and 8,000 years ago for hide-working. The use of fossil shells as tools that have been dated between 35,…
The Dolphin Hunters
Synthesis of faunal collections from several archaeological sites on the three southernmost California Channel Islands and one in the Cape Region of Baja California reveals a distinctive maritime adaptation more heavily reliant on the capture of pelagic dolphins than on near-shore pinnipeds. Previous reports from other Southern California coastal sites suggest that dolphin hunting may have occurred there but to a lesser extent. While these findin…
