Late Holocene paleoenvironmental changes in the Seal Beach wetland (California, USA)
Application of Dendrochronology to Historical Charcoal-Production Sites in the Great Basin, United States
Reassessment of Radiocarbon Age Determinations for the Munkers Creek Phase
The Munkers Creek phase was initially defined using cultural assemblages from the William Young site in the north central Flint Hills of Kansas. Radiocarbon ages from the type site are suspect due to extremely large standard deviations on all but one date and because of stratigraphic inconsistencies. Recently, samples of curated wood charcoal from stratigraphically separate cultural levels at the William Young site were submitted for dating in an…
The Dating of Akortiri Aetokremnos
Paleoclimatic Reconstruction Using the Correlation in δ 18 O of Hackberry Carbonate and Environmental Water, North America
Celtis sp. (commonly known as “hackberry”) fruits were collected from 101 North American sites located in 13 states and one Canadian province between the years of 1979–1994. The biomineralized carbonate endocarp of the hackberry, which is a common botanical fossil found throughout the Quaternary sediments of the Great Plains, was analyzed for its δ 18 O value and plotted against the δ 18 O value of site environmental water to demonstrate the pote…
A Reevaluation of the Marmes Rockshelter Radiocarbon Chronology
Twenty years ago excavation began on Marmes Rockshelter at the mouth of the Palouse River in southeastern Washington. Radiocarbon determinations from cave and adjacent floodplain sediments indicated an established pattern of human use by 10,800 B.P. However, a scarcity of dates between 6000 and 1300 B.P. suggested that either these strata were undated or the cave was unused. Examination of all Marmes radiocarbon ages showed agreement between shel…
