  • Tracking Mississippian Migrations from the Central Mississippi Valley to the Ridge and Valley with a Unified Absolute Chronology

    Open Access•Lynne P Sullivan, Kevin E Smith et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2024•Citada por: 2•Referências: 47

As regional chronologies become better defined, we are better able to track large-scale population movements and related cultural change. A dataset of 156 radiocarbon dates from the Middle Cumberland Region (MCR), evaluated with 199 more dates from the Ridge and Valley portions of northern Georgia and East Tennessee, enable modeling of population movements from the Central Mississippi Valley into the MCR, as well as subsequent movements and effec…

  • All that glitters isn’t calcite

    Michael C Moore, K Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Southeastern Archaeology•2023•Referências: 5

This report offers updated information from crystalline artifact research results initially presented in 2014 by Michael C. Moore and colleagues. At that time, worked and raw crystal items from four Mississippian sites in the Middle Cumberland Region of Tennessee were assessed by the Tennessee Geological Survey as calcite through visual techniques. Subsequent analysis using Fiber Optic Reflectance Spectroscopy (FORS) has determined these specimen…

  • Distribution and Context of Worked Crystalline Artifacts From the Middle Cumberland Region of Tennessee

    Michael C Moore, Kevin E Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Southeastern Archaeology•2014•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

Antiquarian and modern explorations within the Middle Cumberland region of Tennessee have uncovered vast quantities of ceramic, stone, bone, and shell artifacts. Objects made from mineral resources represent a modest percentage of the overall artifact assemblage. Specimens manufactured from crystals comprise a very small portion of the mineral sample, as only six worked crystalline artifacts are documented to date for the Middle Cumberland region…
