  • Studying the Past for the Future

Thomas Foster, Lisa Olsen et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2010

Management of biodiversity and anthropogenic effects on the environment are some of the most difficult challenges facing humans today. In this paper, we describe how archaeological, historical, and ecological data can be combined to identify metrics of ecological change. Archaeological surveys, historic witness tree data, analysis of ancient pollen, and recent satellite imagery are combined to create indicators of change that are useable by moder…

  • Sampling of Data Derived from Historical Documents in Anthropological Research

    Open Access•Thomas H Foster, Arthur Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2010•Referências: 4

In response to Joshua Piker's (this issue) comment on our article (Foster and Cohen 2007), we point out that our article was a description of a test of a hypothesis. Piker's (this issue) criticism of our paper is grounded in the differences between historians and anthropological archaeologists. The historic literature that Piker (this issue) cited does not inform about whether or not Creek Indians hunted where we performed the sediment cores. It …

  • Palynological Evidence of the Effects of the Deerskin Trade on Forest Fires during the Eighteenth Century in Southeastern North America

    Open Access•H Thomas Foster, H Thomas Foster Ii et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2007•Citada por: 4•Referências: 47

Three palynological cores from the coastal plain of Georgia and Alabama were analyzed for paleobotanical remains. Results show that the Indians of southeastern North America increased forest fires used in hunting as a response to the demand for deer hides during the early eighteenth century. Palynological data are consistent with known anthropogenic changes in the region. Charcoal abundance increased significantly between A.D. 1715 and 1770, whic…

  • Peats from the Okefenokee Swamp‐marsh complex

    Arthur D Cohen•ARTICLE•Geoscience and Man•1975

Surface samples from seven peat‐forming environments in the Okefenokee Swamp—Nymphaea, Panicum, Carex, and Woodwardia marshes; Nyssa and Taxodium swamps; and Cyrilla “tree islands”—revealed distinctive pollen and spore assemblages. Within the forested areas, surface samples were characterized by specific assemblages that would make each peat type easily recognizable in the subsurface. Of the marsh types, Woodwardia and Panicum peats had the most …
