Ion-pair Ionization in CO 2 -fed Cesium Sputter Sources
A collision-radiation model of the solid sample cesium sputter ion source led to the rediscovery of anion production by ion-pair production. The model revealed physical processes that may produce high current outputs from such sources and suggested new ways of obtaining high outputs at lower heat and conductive stress to the source. Primary among these solutions is the electron excitation of primary Cs 0 recycled from the sample to provide states…
Increased 14 C AMS Efficiency from Reduced Competitive Ionization
Observation of 80 μA/mm 2 C – current from a 0.5-mm-diameter sample compared to 20 μA/mm 2 from a 1-mm-diameter sample contradicts the long-held surface ionization hypothesis of cesium sputter ion source operation. Resonant ionization occurs in neutral Cs plasma above a sample in a sputtered pit or well. A collision-radiation model of that plasma followed electronic excitation and radiation relaxation up to the Cs(7d) state. The Cs(5d) metastable…
How to Convert Biological Carbon Into Graphite for AMS
Isotope tracer studies, particularly radiocarbon measurements, play a key role in biological, nutritional, and environmental research. Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is now the most sensitive detection method for 14 C, but AMS is not widely used in kinetic studies of humans. Part of the reason is the expense, but costs would decrease if AMS were used more widely. One component in the cost is sample preparation for AMS. Biological and environ…
Counting Statistics and Ion Interval Density in AMS
Confidence in the precisions of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and decay measurements must be comparable for the application of the radiocarbon calibration to age determinations using both technologies. We confirmed the random nature of the temporal distribution of 14 C ions in an AMS spectrometer for a number of sample counting rates and properties of the sputtering process. The temporal distribution of ion counts was also measured to confi…

Vermilion Lakes Site
The Vermilion Lakes site in Banff National Park, Alberta, has yielded cultural remains suggesting a possible sheep-hunting focus during the Paleoindian period and providing evidence for windbreaks or shelters dating as early as 10,300 B.P. Debris flows at this site have separated and preserved six or more cultural components dating between the mid-eleventh and mid-tenth millennia before present. Paleoenvironmental evidence suggests that most of t…
Rapid Production of Graphite Without Contamination for Biomedical AMS
The application of AMS to the detection of 14 C makes possible a new class of sensitive experiments in molecular biology. Such experiments inherently produce large numbers of samples for the determination of biological variability in molecular interactions. The samples vary in 14 C concentration over many orders of magnitude. We added TiH 2 to aid the reduction of CO 2 by zinc in a sealed tube to reproducibly make graphite without sample cross-co…
Younger Dryas Climatic Reversal in Northeastern USA? AMS Ages for an Old Problem
Late-glacial macrofossils from a 10-m core from Alpine Swamp, New Jersey, were radiocarbon dated using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The arrival of the first trees to the area following deglaciation is indicated by maximum percentages of spruce pollen and a date of 12,290 ± 440 yr B.P. on a single spruce needle. Subsequent spread of deciduous hardwoods was followed by the expansion of boreal taxa, including spruce ( Picea ), fir ( Abies ),…
Accelerator radiocarbon dating of human blood proteins in pigments from Late Pleistocene art sites in Australia
Absolute dating of rock paintings has always used an indirect means, generally by dating material in strata sealing or overlying the pictures. AMS dating of very small carbon samples now allows direct determination of the age of an organic portion in the matter of the picture itself
Radiocarbon Dating of Pollen by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
Radiocarbon dating of bulk sediments has been the standard method for establishing chronologies in the studies of lake sediment cores which have contributed significantly to our knowledge of late Quaternary paleo-environments. These bulk sediment dates are presumed to be direct ageindicators for the speciments (e.g., pollen or macrofossils) which are actually being studied. However, several recent studies have reinforced long-standing apprehensio…
