Evidence for unbroken continuity of tree taxa over the last c. 13,500 years is presented from a biodiversity ‘hotspot’ nature reserve in south-west Sweden. Forest composition, continuity, fire and disturbance events are reconstructed using palaeoecological methods. Switch-Reference in Hidatsa
Switch-Reference (SR) is a system that tracks subject continuity between clauses. In this paper, I examine the morphology of the SR system found in the Traditional Hidatsa texts of Lowie (1939) and show that there were two different SR systems in Hidatsa that varied with registerial selection. I then detail how this SR system interacted with other clause-final markers within two distinct registers of speech. This older system is compared to that …
Climate and atmospheric circulation changes over the past 1000 years reconstructed from oxygen isotopes in lake-sediment carbonate from Ireland
A 1000 year long subdecadal-resolution record of carbonate oxygen isotopes (δ 18 O c ) from Lough-na-Shade, Ireland, provides evidence for changing atmospheric circulation over northwest Europe. The total range of δ 18 O c values (>5‰) is too large to be explained by changes in water temperature. Moreover, good correlation between the lake record and a previously published δ 18 O time series from an Irish speleothem indicates that the changes in …
