  • Pacific Nicaraguan Radiocarbon Dates

Open Access•Geoffrey Mccafferty, Andrés G Mejía Ramón et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2026

In 2005, McCafferty and Steinbrenner presented new radiocarbon dates from Santa Isabel to challenge the traditional ceramic sequence for the Postclassic of Pacific Nicaragua. Since then, several projects have generated more data, such that a new chronology and cultural sequence can now be suggested. In this article we present 79 chronometric dates from 19 sites, representing a 1,500-year temporal span. This new scheme is divorced from the existin…

  • Scaling up phytolith preparation protocols for big data

Open Access•Kate Dudgeon, Andrés G Mejía Ramón et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026

Analytical procedures in phytolith analysis are transforming with the potential of AI to automate phytolith identification and classification, facilitating the analysis of unprecedented large datasets. Currently, phytolith extraction protocols are inadequate for processing the large numbers of samples it is becoming possible to analyse. Digital microscope scanners make it possible digitise phytolith slides at a high resolution with minimal human …

  • Beyond house size

Open Access•Jessica Munson, Jonathan Scholnick et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2023•Citada por: 1

House size provides a comparative measure of household wealth that enables archaeologists to track global trends in inequality across a range of sedentary societies. Such approaches hold particular promise for Maya archaeology given its long history of settlement pattern research and recent applications of LiDAR to map large areas surrounding ancient Maya cities. Estimating dwelling size, however, is not a trivial exercise. This article addresses…

  • Geophysical Prospection at the Formative Site of Altica in the Teotihuacan Valley Piedmont

    Open Access•Andrés G Mejía Ramón, Luis Barba et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2019•Citada por: 3•Referências: 6

The Formative-period site of Altica in the Patlachique Range poses many methodological problems when designing an excavation strategy. Three millennia of erosion, twentieth-century chisel plowing, and modern reforestation efforts have destroyed or disturbed most surface architecture above the local tepetate bedrock. As such, in the early stages of the Altica Project, the primary concern was the detection and identification of subsurface features,…

  • New Research at Teotihuacan’s Tlajinga District, 2012–2015

    Open Access•D M Carballo, Kenneth Hirth et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2019•Citada por: 11•Referências: 27

Teotihuacan's Tlajinga district is a cluster of neighborhoods on the southern periphery of the city best known for earlier investigations at Compound 33:S3W1. New research includes excavations at two other apartment compounds and along the southern extension of the Street of the Dead. Excavation contexts, major finds, chronology, and preliminary interpretations are the subject of this article. We highlight evidence attesting to a major obsidian-b…
