Identification of Cochineal Dye in Spinning Vessels from the Aztec Period in Xochimilco, Basin of Mexico
Organic residues and dyes are rarely preserved in archaeological contexts of wetland environments, although their recovery and identification are fundamental for understanding the technologies, raw materials, and production processes developed by women weavers in lacustrine communities. Using minimally invasive analytical techniques based on High Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass…
Palynological analysis of an archaeological chinampa in Xochimilco (Basin of Mexico). Construction technology and agricultural production
The Lacustrine Preceramic Cultures in the Basin of Mexico
In this chapter, the authors present their effort to reevaluate the evidence for the preceramic occupation in the Basin of Mexico, one of the least known periods in the archaeological sequence of the region. The lacustrine system of the Basin of Mexico has played an important role in the study of the evolution of social complexity. Regardless of questions surrounding some of the discoveries reported from this area, direct dating clearly shows tha…

Taphonomic Analysis of the Pleistocene–Holocene Transition Faunal Assemblage from Santa Marta Cave, Chiapas
The taphonomic analysis of fauna associated with early human occupations of Santa Marta Cave shows a high incidence of anthropogenic activity in the formation of the cave deposits, although other accumulators contributed to the formation processes. Our findings support subsistence strategies consisting of the exploitation of small- and medium-sized mammals, and aquatic species such as freshwater snails (Pachychilus sp.), swamp turtles (Kinosterno…
Early–middle Formative Period Subsistence in the Teotihuacan Valley, Mexico
Recent excavations at the Early–Middle Formative period site of Altica in the southern piedmont of the Teotihuacan Valley, Mexico, provide evidence for early agriculture and plant use in a rural community in the northern Basin of Mexico. In the Basin of Mexico, settled agricultural communities were present in the southern sector of the region from at least 1200 calb.c.Initial expansion into the semiarid northern sector of the Basin, however, appe…
