Både arbeiderbevegelsen og den læstadianske vekkelsen tilbød løsninger for et bedre liv. Begge grupper hadde stor appell i den nordnorske småkårsbefolkningen. Mange tilsluttet seg begge bevegelsenes kamp for bedre kår og større selvbestemmelse. Etter hvert ble folket satt på valg fra ledersjiktet i bevegelsene og måtte velge enten arbeiderbevegelse eller læstadianisme. Det ble et vanskelig valg mellom to goder.
