Distribution of finds as a reflection of natural and cultural processes (evidence from archaeological horizon 4 of the Tolbor-4 site, Northern Mongolia)
Pit in Archaeological Horizon 4/5 of the Tolbor-21 Site
The article presents an analysis of materials from archaeological horizon (AH) 4/5 of the Tolbor-21 site (Northern Mongolia) dated to the boundary between the Initial and Early Upper Paleolithic (ca. 42–40 ka BP). The study focuses on archaeological finds originating from a spatially pronounced depression of uncertain genesis, overlain by AH4 sediments and intruding into the deposits of AH5, which contained concentrations of lithic artifacts and …
Changes in the Morphology of Laminar Products in the Upper Paleolithic Industries of Tolbor-4 (Mongolia)
The article provides the analysis of blade product morphology from the cultural and chronological sequence of the Tolbor-4 site (Northern Mongolia), covering the periods of the Initial, Early, and Late Upper Paleolithic (ca. 45,000–12,000 BP). During the site occupation, homogeneous local raw material was used, which makes it possible to exclude the influence of raw material factor on the morphology of knapped products. The study was primarily ai…
Results of the 2025 Excavations at Tsagaan-Agui Cave, Gobi Altai
This paper presents the results of recent investigations conducted at Tsagaan Agui Cave, located in the Gobi Altai of southern Central Mongolia, during 2021–2025. Pit 2 in the Main Chamber revealed a stratigraphic sequence spanning from the Middle to the Late Pleistocene and identified seven cultural layers. In 2025, Pit 2 was expanded, and deposits containing cultural layers 1–4 were examined in the newly opened units. Layer 1 contained several …
Spatial Structures of the Initial/Early Upper Paleolithic at Tolbor-21, Northern Mongolia
This article describes the spatial structures of archaeological horizon 4 at Tolbor-21 in northern Mongolia, on the basis of data from 2015–2017. The presence of non-utilitarian items, faunal remains with traces of human impact, and the use of fi re render this site near outcrops of raw materials promising for the reconstruction of the spatial organization of Early Upper Paleolithic sites in northern Mongolia. Spatial analysis included visual obs…
A New Type of IUP Settlement in the Selenga River Basin, Northern Mongolia
Here we outline the results of excavations at a recently discovered Initial Upper Paleolithic site, Kharganyn Gol-13, located on a tributary of the Selenga River in northern Mongolia. The Selenga valley and those of its tributaries were key routes along which humans dispersed during the Initial Upper Paleolithic. The concentration of sites of that period is highest here. Most are situated near outcrops of lithic raw material and are classifi ed a…
Late Pleistocene Paleoenvironments and Episodic Human Occupations in the Orkhon Valley of Central Mongolia
Here, we present initial results of a new course of research being carried out at the Moiltyn-am, Orkhon-1, and Orkhon-7 Paleolithic sites in the Orkhon River Valley, central Mongolia. Our research focuses on the Moiltyn-am site, which preserves a cultural and chronological sequence from the Final Middle to the Late Upper Paleolithic. Results from analyses of rare earth elements, Strontium (Sr) isotopes, and faunal assemblages are correlated with…

A Paleolithic Cache at Tolbor (Northern Mongolia)
This study presents analyses of a unique assemblage of lithic artifacts, 57 large flakes, discovered in the Ikh Tulberiin Gol River valley of Northern Mongolia. The assemblage represents the first Paleolithic cache ever discovered in Mongolia and is an isolated find, not directly associated with a habitation or logistic activity site. Results of use-wear analysis suggest most of the flakes were unused, with only a few minimally used for processin…
Early Upper Paleolithic Stone Tool Technologies of Northern Mongolia
Based on regularly retouched tools recovered from the Early Upper Paleolithic Tolbor-4 and Tolbor-15 sites in the Khangai Mountains of northern Mongolia, we reconstruct the development of cores from large bidirectional forms for the production of elongated blades to flat unidirectional and orthogonal nuclei. Blanks also became progressively smaller, while the toolkit remained virtually unchanged. Two detectable principal technological trends incl…
