Towns, Fortress, and Wall
The fortified settlements of Liao empire (907–1125) on the territory of Mongolia have been surveyed since 2004. As a result, a detailed map of all monuments of Liao empire in Mongolia was compiled. In addition, excavations of Chin Tolgoin Balgas in 2004–2008, and Khermen Denj in 2010 2012, 2017 2019 were conducted. The block structure of the town’s layout was revealed. Dwellings, stone foundations, estates and internal lanes were discovered withi…
Use of Parts of Ram Carcasses in the Funerary Practices of the Baikal Region Population in the 13th–14th Centuries
Use of Parts of Ram Carcasses in the Funerary Practices of the Baikal Region Population in the 13th–14th Centuries
In the 13th and 14th centuries, there was a custom of placing parts of a ram/sheep carcass in the grave as an offering in the Baikal region. Materials from three areas, which were then parts of the Mongol Empire, are described: southeastern Trans-Baikal, northern Khövsgöl, and southern Angara. Graves are described with a focus on sheep bones, their composition, and location in the grave. In the southern Trans-Baikal, the shank was usually placed …
Geophysical prospection and archaeological excavation of ancient iron smelting sites in the Barun‐Khal valley on the western shore of Lake Baikal (Olkhon region, Siberia)
In 1997, an ancient iron production site, Barun‐Khal 2, was discovered in the Barun‐Khal valley (Olkhon region, near the west shore of Lake Baikal). This discovery initiated studies of the archaeometallurgical potential of the valley. They included magnetometry, resistivity, self‐potential (SP) and radiometric surveys, archaeological excavation, analysis of chemical composition and magnetism of slag and other residuals, and radiocarbon dating of …
Preliminary Results of the Studies of the Xiongnu Fortress Tereljin Turvuldjin
In 2015, the Russian-Mongolian expedition carried out investigations in the Tereljin Turvuldjin site in Mongolia. The monument has a shape of an irregular square. On the hill there are corner towers, in the center of each side there are gates. Inside the site there are four platforms connected in pairs by roads. In the process of excavation a large number of tiles and bricks are found. The article gives a technological and typological analysis of…
A Rock-Magnetic Quest for Possible Ore Sources for the Ancient Iron-Smelting Industry in the Olkhon Region (Lake Baikal, Siberia)
Rock-magnetic techniques were used to examine the topsoil layer of Kurma archaeological site (in the Olkhon region, on the north-western coast of Lake Baikal, Siberia) in an effort to determine the possible sources of iron ores for iron-smelting centres (at about the bc/ad boundary). Measurements have shown a magnetic enhancement of the topsoil due to magnetite grains resulting from weathering of strongly magnetic crystalline rocks. They have als…

As a powerful optimization technique, multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithms have been widely used in various fields. However, performing well in terms of convergence and diversity simultaneously is still a challenging task for most existing algorithms. In this paper, a multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm based on two-archive mechanism (MOPSO_TA) is proposed for the above challenge. First, two archives, including…
Vegetation and Climate Changes in the Bolshoe Inyaptukskoe Lake Basin (North Baikal Plateau) in the Middle and Late Holocene
This article presents new interdisciplinary observations relating to environmental changes in the Bolshoe Inyaptukskoe Lake Basin, North Baikal Plateau. A column taken from a loam/turf deposit at 1320 m above sea level is shown to reflect changes in vegetation and climate over the last 8–9 thousand years through its palynology, radiocarbon chronology, and the count of charcoal particles. The chronology of the reconstructed changes in the vegetati…
