Dogs in Funerary Practices of Bronze Age Populations of the Ural-Kazakhstan Steppes
Dogs in Funerary Practices of Bronze Age Populations of the Ural-Kazakhstan Steppes
This article presents the results of a study of grave goods and the composition of sacrificial animals in burials of the Sintashta culture in the Ural-Kazakhstan steppes. Two burial samples (one including dogs and the other without dogs) were examined in order to test the hypothesis that individuals interred with dogs held a high social status. Particular attention is paid to the results of a correspondence analysis conducted to compare the funer…
Evolution of the European regional large mammals assemblages in the end of the Middle Pleistocene – The first half of the Late Pleistocene (MIS 6–MIS 4)
An Early Iron Age Camp of Reindeer Hunters in the Bolshezemelskaya Tundra, Nenets Autonomous Okrug
This study outlines the fi ndings of excavations at More-Yu II—a site in the northern Bolshezemelskaya tundra. The habitation layer with numerous charcoal lenses was discovered inside the layer of buried soil overlain by eolian sand. Most fi nds are ceramics and animal bones. Arrowheads, o rnaments, tools, and ritual items are very rare. On the basis of palynological and faunal analyses, environmental changes from the sub-boreal warming until the…

Remains of Brown Bear (Ursus Arctos L.) From the Kaninskaya Cave Sanctuary in the Northern Urals
Fossil remains of brown bear from Kaninskaya cave in the northern Ural are described. They were accumulated during the Late Bronze Age, Early Iron Age, and Late Iron Age as a result of human activity. We analyze the composition of skeletal elements and the nature of their fragmentation. Sex and age of individuals whose bones were apparently used in rituals are assessed, and the seasonality of these ceremonies is evaluated. The main object of cere…
Carnivores (Mammalia, Carnivora) of the Urals in the Late Pleistocene and Holocene
The Eurasian mammoth distribution during the second half of the Late Pleistocene and the Holocene
Changes in the Eurasian distribution of the musk ox (Ovibos moschatus) and the extinct bison (Bison priscus) during the last 50 ka BP
