Integration of GPR and magnetics to study the interior features and history of earth mounds, Mapoon, Queensland, Australia
The nature of earth mounds and their function over time in northern Australia is of ongoing academic debate. Here we present how the integration of ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetic data, after being adjusted for surface elevation changes, was used to analyse the interior features and objects within six earth mounds in Mapoon, western Cape York, Australia. The archaeological documentation and geochemistry of the Rua Tokitoki adze quarry and the Poike fine‐grain basalt source on Rapa Nui (Easter Island)
Rapa Nui is famous for itsmoai(statues) andahu(platforms), yet research into the island's many basalt quarries, sources and workshops is limited. These geological and archaeological sites provided the raw materials for tools such astoki(adzes and picks), which facilitated the manufacture of Easter Island's iconic stonework. Located at the base of an escarpment at ~3720 m elevation, in the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry Complex, Hawai‘i Island, is a small outcrop of basaltic glass that was utilised by adze makers for at least several hundred years as a source of toolstone for the manufacture of small, expedient flake tools.
